About dragon's dogma names

Dragon's Dogma names follow the feel of Capcom's setting: a medieval Britain with the serial numbers filed off. Gransys and Vermund characters carry plain, old-fashioned English and Welsh names (Savan, Edmun Dragonsbane, Mercedes Marten, Ulrika, Glyndwr, Doireann), knights are addressed as Ser, and the peasantry of Cassardis or Melve get short, homely names like Quina, Rook and Valmiro. The second game widened the palette: Battahl's beastren and Regentkin draw on Arabic- and Persian-flavoured sounds (Nadinia, Menella, Phaesus), the elves of the Sacred Arbor are openly Welsh, and dwarves like Brokkr sound Norse.

Pawns are the other half of the naming problem. Because your main pawn is hired by other players and lives in the Rift, the best pawn names are short, readable in a hiring menu, and distinctive enough that someone remembers who lent them that sorcerer. Single evocative words (Kestrel, Thorn, Rime), clipped period names (Osric, Tegwen, Bram) and vocation epithets (Fenwick the Mage) all work better than a paragraph of titles.

This list mixes canon characters from both games, original Arisen full names in Gransys and Vermund style, Battahli and beastren names, Arbor elves, dwarven smiths, pawn-ready single names and monster-hunter epithets so you can name the Arisen, the pawn and everyone they meet.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Name your Arisen in the style of their starting village: plain English or Welsh names (Cedric Ashvane, Anwen Calder) for Cassardis, Melve or Vernworth, and Arabic- or Persian-inflected names (Farid Ol-Khazad, Layla Sefkhet) for a Battahli background.
  • Keep main pawn names to one or two short words; other players see them in a cramped Rift hiring list, so Kestrel Vane or Bram reads better than a long title, and it is easier to recognise when you see it in someone else's party.
  • Use Ser before a name only for sworn knights of the Wyrm Hunt, the Vermund court or a noble house; fishers, merchants and pawns would never be called Ser in the games' dialogue.
  • If you are playing a beastren in Dragon's Dogma 2, pair a Battahli given name with a pelt or claw byname (Kazim Nightpelt, Najla Brindle) to sound like a native of Bakbattahl rather than a Vermundian in a costume.
  • Avoid using Grigori, Daimon or the Ur-Dragon for a player character; they are the dragons and bosses of the series and will confuse anyone who knows the story. Monster-slayer epithets like Wyrmslayer or Griffin Hunter are a better way to reference the hunt.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of names fit Dragon's Dogma?

Mostly old English, Welsh and light medieval French names, because Gransys and Vermund are modelled on medieval Britain. Canon examples are Savan, Edmun Dragonsbane, Aelinore, Mercedes Marten, Julien, Ulrika, Brant and Doireann. Dragon's Dogma 2 adds Battahl, whose beastren and Regentkin characters have Arabic- and Persian-sounding names such as Nadinia, Menella and Phaesus, plus Welsh elves and Norse dwarves.

What should I name my main pawn?

Something short and memorable, since other Arisen will browse your pawn in the Rift and hire it by name. Single words such as Kestrel, Thorn, Rime or Wren, clipped period names like Osric, Tegwen or Bram, or a name-plus-vocation epithet like Fenwick the Mage all work. Many players also give the pawn a name that pairs with their Arisen's, for example a knight called Roland Vessic with a pawn called Sable Wyck.

Does the Arisen have a canon name?

No. The player names the Arisen in both games, so there is no official name, though Savan, the hero of the prologue in the first Dragon's Dogma, is often used as a stand-in. Dragon's Dogma 2 refers to the player simply as the Arisen and to the pretender on the throne as Sovran Sven, so any name in a medieval English, Welsh or Battahli style fits the dialogue.

Can I name my character after Dragon's Dogma characters?

You can, and names like Mercedes, Julien, Ulrika or Glyndwr fit naturally, but avoid dragons and bosses such as Grigori, Daimon or the Ur-Dragon for a player character. The original names in this list are free to use for your Arisen, pawns, fan fiction or a tabletop game set in Gransys or Vermund.
