Generate locathah names for D&D: short, vowel-heavy given names that sound like they were spoken underwater, full names with tribal bynames like Eel-Rider and Netmender, and tribe names for the shoals and lagoons your fish-folk call home.

About locathah names

Locathah have been in Dungeons & Dragons since the original Monster Manual: fish-headed, fin-backed humanoids who live in warm coastal shallows, fish with nets and spears, ride giant eels in older lore, and mostly want to be left alone. The 2019 Locathah Rising supplement made them a playable race with traits like Leviathan Will and Natural Armor, and Ghosts of Saltmarsh put them on the table as a peaceful people squeezed between sahuagin raiders and land-dwellers. What no official book gives you is a list of names, so tables have to invent a sound for them.

The convention this generator follows is a language shaped by gills and open water. Given names are short, heavy on long vowels (oo, aa, uu) and soft consonants (l, th, h, m), with hard k and glottal catches for emphasis: Oolah, Thessum, Ka'lu, Ghulloh. Because locathah are tribal and practical, most adults also carry a byname in Common that records a job, a feat or a home water, such as Kaloo Eel-Rider, Thessum Three-Nets or Ulvah of the Sunken Reed. Tribes are named for the shoal, reef or current they follow. Pull a single name for a fisher NPC, a full name for a player character, and a tribe name to give that character somewhere to come from.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Keep given names to one or two syllables and let the byname do the storytelling. Ooth is a name; Ooth Who Fled the Sahuagin is a character.
  • Use doubled vowels and apostrophes sparingly. One or two per name (Saavee, Oo'mek) sounds aquatic; four in a row sounds like a keyboard accident.
  • Bynames should be concrete and local: nets, hooks, eels, reefs, tides, pearls and wrecks. Avoid grand titles; locathah society respects elders and good fishers, not lords.
  • Name the tribe for the water it follows (Warmshallows, Nine Shoals, Grey Lagoon) and then name its members' home waters to match, so the party can tell tribes apart by ear.
  • For a locathah player character, pick a byname earned before the campaign started and plan a second one the character could earn at the table.

Frequently asked questions

Do locathah have official names in D&D?

No. Neither Locathah Rising nor Ghosts of Saltmarsh includes a name table, and older editions only describe their culture. The names here are built on a consistent invented phonology (long vowels, soft consonants, hard k, occasional glottal stops) plus Common-language bynames, which matches how the race is described and keeps a whole tribe sounding related.

What is the difference between locathah, kuo-toa, sahuagin and merfolk names?

Kuo-toa names are harsher and more alien, full of clicks and double consonants (Bloppblippodd). Sahuagin names are sharp and martial. Merfolk and triton names lean Greek or elven. Locathah names sit in between: soft and watery but humble, with working-class bynames rather than noble houses.

Are locathah male and female names different?

There is no official distinction, and this generator does not split them. Use any given name for any gender; if you want a pattern at your table, some groups give longer three-syllable names (Olluthaan, Quaalumeth) to elders and shorter ones to the young regardless of gender.

Can I use these names for other fish-people or aquatic races?

Yes. They work well for homebrew fish-folk, Pathfinder's aquatic races, and generic ocean-dwelling tribes in any setting. Drop the apostrophes for a gentler sound, or lean on the k and th endings for a tougher, more warlike tribe.
