Sage Name Generator

A sage is the character who knows more than the hero and says less. Their names tend to work by contrast with the flashier cast: softer consonants, longer vowels, and often an old-fashioned given name that suggests they were already elderly when the protagonist was born. In Western fantasy that means names like Orvand, Thessaly, Anselm or Morwenna, frequently paired with a place or a calling instead of a family name (Galen of the Salt Cliffs, Archivist Pellam Thorne). A short epithet that points to how they see rather than what they fight is the classic finishing touch: the Listener, the Far-Sighted, Quietstone.

Real-world traditions give you a much wider palette. Zen and Chan masters, Sufi sheikhs and hakims, Hindu rishis and acharyas, Celtic druids and bards, Norse völvas and lawspeakers, Slavic volkhvy, Greek philosophers and Egyptian scribes each carry their own honorifics, and borrowing the honorific (Master, Elder, Starets, Völva, Pir, Amauta) does a lot of the characterisation for you.
