Mentor Name Generator

The mentor is one of the oldest roles in storytelling. The word itself comes from Mentor, the old friend Odysseus left in charge of his son, and whose form Athena borrowed to guide Telemachus. Since then the archetype has been filled by wizards, monks, drill sergeants, piano teachers, grandmothers and bartenders, and a good mentor name signals that role before the character has said a word.

Three things make a mentor name land. First, a title or honorific: Master, Sensei, Sifu, Professor, Coach, Elder, Abbess, Doc, or simply Old. Second, a name with some weight and history, often a little out of fashion (Ephram, Wilhelmina, Cornelius, Ottilie) so the character feels like they come from an earlier generation than the hero. Third, a hint of where they earned their wisdom, whether that is a craft (Master Smith Ingeborg Stahl), a rank (Gunnery Sergeant Rollo Marks) or a place (the Hermit of Carrow Fell).
