Generate old person names that actually sound like someone's grandparent: full first-and-last names drawn from the names that were common for babies in the 1920s through 1950s, paired with surnames from the real mix of American and immigrant families. Ideal for elderly characters in fiction, games, comics and family-history writing.
About old person names
An old person's name sounds old because it was fashionable seventy or eighty years ago and then fell out of use. Someone who is 85 today was born in the early 1940s, so the believable first names are the ones that topped the charts then and are rare on playgrounds now: Harold, Eugene, Vernon, Clarence, Leroy, Melvin and Norman for men; Mildred, Doris, Bernice, Gladys, Thelma, Lois and Geraldine for women. A character in their late sixties or seventies was born in the 1950s, which shifts the list toward Gary, Dennis, Larry, Ronald, Judith, Carol, Linda and Joyce.
Surnames matter just as much. The oldest generation in English-speaking countries includes the children and grandchildren of the great immigration waves, so Italian, Polish, Irish, German, Jewish, Scandinavian, Mexican-American, Japanese-American and Black American surnames all belong here alongside older English and Scots-Irish names. Regional flavor helps too: double names like Betty Lou, Ora Lee and Billy Ray read as Southern and rural, French surnames such as Boudreaux and Thibodeaux place a character in Louisiana, and names like Solveig Bjornstad point to the upper Midwest.
Use these names for grandparents in a novel, residents of a retirement community, elderly NPCs, obituaries and letters in period fiction, or any character whose name should carry a few decades of history.
Tips for choosing a name
- Work backwards from the character's age: subtract it from the year your story is set, then pick a first name that was popular in that birth decade rather than one that merely sounds quaint.
- Give elderly characters the name they were actually called. Many went by a middle name, a nickname (Bud, Sis, Dub, Junior) or a formal version (Mr. Pettigrew, Mrs. Caldwell) that younger characters use without thinking.
- Match the surname to where the character grew up: Polish and Italian names for Rust Belt cities, Scandinavian for Minnesota and the Dakotas, French for Louisiana, Hispanic for the Southwest, and older English names for New England and Appalachia.
- Avoid names that are retro-chic again. Hazel, Evelyn, Arthur and Theodore are back in fashion, so they read as a toddler as easily as a great-grandparent; Mildred, Bernice, Elmer and Clarence do not have that problem.
- A slightly unusual name like Cletus, Ozella, Waymon or Icie can instantly suggest a rural upbringing or a family naming tradition, but use them sparingly so the cast does not read as a parody.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a name sound like an old person's name?
Mostly timing. Names that were hugely popular in one era and then dropped out of use, such as Mildred, Gladys, Harold and Clarence, get associated with the only people still carrying them. Names that have come back into fashion, like Hazel or Theodore, stop sounding old because babies have them again.
Are these real people?
No. Every entry combines a first name and surname that were common in the relevant era, but the full names are invented and not drawn from any directory. Any match with a real individual, living or deceased, is coincidental.
Can I use this for both old men and old women?
Yes. The list alternates male and female names and covers a wide age range, from characters in their late sixties to centenarians. If you only need one gender or a specific generation, the Old Man, Old Lady and decade-specific generators linked below narrow the results.
Do these names work outside the United States?
Many do. The English, Irish, Scottish and Jewish names fit Britain, Canada and Australia, and the European names fit their home countries' older generations. Names that are specifically American, such as Southern double names or Black American naming traditions, are best kept for American settings.
