Reploid Name Generator
Hunter callsigns and Maverick names, Mega Man X style
Generate Reploid names in the style of Mega Man X, Zero and ZX: one-word Hunter and Navigator names like Tensor, Gimbal and Raster, Maverick boss names like Hail Puffin and Drill Pangolin, and mythic single names like Khimaira and Seiryu.
About Reploid names
Reploids, the thinking robots of the Mega Man X games, are named in a few clear registers. Maverick Hunters, their Navigators and the freelancers around them carry one short word: Zero, Axl, Alia, Signas, Dynamo. Navigators lean toward design terms, as Layer and Pallette show. Maverick bosses follow the pattern the English releases made famous, a power or element followed by an animal or plant: Chill Penguin, Storm Eagle, Magma Dragoon. The Zero games change the tone again, with Guardians named from myth (Harpuia, Leviathan, Fefnir) and a Resistance that favors French words such as Ciel and Alouette.
The list holds 29 names from the games for reference, each one named in the questions below. Everything else is original and follows the same patterns: Hunter callsigns drawn from math, machine parts and field terms (Tensor, Gimbal, Sortie), Navigator and support names (Raster, Sepia, Saffron), Mavericks built on real animals and plants (Hail Puffin, Drill Pangolin, Snare Flytrap), mythic and French single names (Khimaira, Seiryu, Brume), musical terms in a nod to the classic series, and a handful in the ZX style, such as Voltfin the Eelroid.
None of the original names are official, and this page has no tie to Capcom.
How to choose Reploid names
- Pick the register by role. A Hunter or Navigator wants one clipped word such as Radix or Vellum, and a stage boss wants the two-word Maverick form, as in Quake Badger or Mine Pufferfish.
- For a Maverick, let the first word say what the boss does and the second what it looks like. Sonar Dolphin and Rotor Maple each tell you the weapon you would win and the shape of the fight.
- Build a boss roster the way the games do: eight Mavericks, each with a different element and a different kind of animal, so the weakness chain is easy to read. Mix a bird, a fish, an insect and a plant before you repeat a type.
- Use the mythic and French names for a Zero-style cast. Guardians suit names like Orthros or Suzaku, while members of a resistance cell suit softer words like Brume, Plume or Colombe.
- Keep a Navigator's name gentle on the ear. They are the voice in the Hunter's helmet, so Opaline or Cerise fits better than anything that sounds like a weapon.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Reploid?
In the Mega Man X games a Reploid is a robot with free will, built on the design of X. Reploids that turn violent are branded Mavericks, and the Maverick Hunters are the Reploids sent to stop them. The names here cover all three roles.
How do Maverick boss names work?
In the English versions a Maverick has two words: a power, element or action, then an animal or plant, as in Chill Penguin and Storm Eagle. The original names in this list keep that order and use real species, for example Tidal Otter, Thermal Condor and Sting Nettle.
Which names in the list are from the games?
Twenty-nine of them: Zero, Axl, Alia, Signas, Dynamo, Layer, Pallette, Iris, Vile, Sigma and Lumine; the Mavericks Chill Penguin, Storm Eagle, Spark Mandrill, Flame Mammoth, Sting Chameleon, Launch Octopus, Magma Dragoon, Storm Owl, Neon Tiger, Blast Hornet, Crystal Snail and Frost Walrus; and Harpuia, Leviathan, Fefnir, Elpizo, Alouette and the human scientist Ciel from the Zero games. They are there as a reference. Every other name is original, written in the same patterns, and not official.
Can I use these for a fan game or a tabletop campaign?
Yes, the original names are meant for your own Hunters, Navigators and bosses in fan fiction, fan games and role-playing. If you plan to publish something, leave the names from the games out and check for yourself that your choice is not already in use elsewhere.
