About Pac-Man ghost names

The four ghosts of the 1980 arcade game are Blinky (red), Pinky (pink), Inky (cyan) and Clyde (orange). The arcade title screen gives each one a trait name as well: Shadow, Speedy, Bashful and Pokey. If you only came for one of those four, they are in the list with a label in parentheses, next to later ghosts such as Sue, Tim, Funky and Spunky. There are 15 labelled entries in all.

The naming joke is simple, and every other name here follows it: three short nicknames that rhyme, then one plain name that breaks the run. A nickname also hints at how a ghost behaves, because the four do not move alike. One chases, one cuts ahead, one is hard to predict and one drifts off on its own. Eat a power pellet and they all turn blue and run, which is where names like Shivers, Yikes and Turntail come from.

Everything without a label is a new name in that mold: rhymes on -inky and its cousins, two-syllable mood names, trait names, the deliberately ordinary fourth name, color names for new ghosts, boss ghosts, scared blue-mode names, maze habits, retro arcade words, and 60 ready-made sets of four for group costumes, pets in sets and classroom teams.

How to choose Pac-Man ghost names

  • For a group of four, pick three names that rhyme and give the fourth person the plain one. Winky, Slinky, Dinky and Gus works the same way the arcade set does.
  • Let the name say how the ghost moves: Flanker or Tagalong for a chaser, Dawdler or Slowpoke for a slow one, Fickle or Zigzag for one nobody can predict.
  • For a new ghost, choose the color first and the name follows, such as Minty for green, Peachy for pale orange or Indigo for deep blue.
  • Keep it to two syllables where you can. A short name fits a high-score table, a name tag and a pet's collar.
  • Making your own maze game? Give your ghosts new names and new colors, and keep the labelled classics for talking about the original.

Frequently asked questions

What are the names of the four Pac-Man ghosts?

Blinky is red, Pinky is pink, Inky is cyan and Clyde is orange. The arcade title screen also lists a trait name for each: Shadow, Speedy, Bashful and Pokey. For a random pick of the four, roll a die and count in that order, rolling again on a five or six.

Are there more than four ghosts?

Yes. Sue takes Clyde's place in Ms. Pac-Man, Tim does the same in Jr. Pac-Man, and Pac-Mania adds Funky and Spunky. Those names are in the list with a label, as are the Japanese names Akabei, Aosuke and Guzuta.

How do I name a new ghost in the same style?

Take one trait and shrink it to a short nickname, ideally one that ends in y: Mopey, Jumpy, Dozy. If you are naming a set, rhyme three and make the fourth plain, as in Itchy, Twitchy, Stitchy & Steve.

Can I use these names for a fan game, a costume group or pets?

The new names in the list are everyday nicknames and plain words, so they suit maze clones, party games, group costumes and pets in sets. This site has no connection with the makers of Pac-Man, and the game and its characters belong to their owner. If you plan to sell something, check names and rights for yourself first.
