About Mega Man names

Classic Mega Man names run on one frame. Each stage boss is a Robot Master, often a robot built for a job, named with one theme word plus Man: Cut Man, Guts Man, Ice Man. Splash Woman, in Mega Man 9, uses the same frame with Woman. The theme word tells you the stage, the attack and the special weapon the hero wins. Around the bosses, the cast is named from music (Rock, Roll, Bass, Treble), the helpers are short and lively (Rush the dog, Beat the bird), and the scientists are a title plus a surname, as in Dr. Light and Dr. Wily.

This list has 1,000 names. About four in ten are Robot Masters with element, trade, nature, combat and odd-job themes, such as Kiln Man, Gravel Man and Lantern Woman. The rest are music-named robots (Chord, Reverb), helper names (Scamper, Chirp), doctors (Dr. Solder), Battle Network NetNavis written with .EXE (Query.EXE), special weapons (Quartz Shard, Monsoon Burst), fortress machines, stage and lab names, and single names from moons, minor planets and stars in the manner of the Stardroids.

Thirty names come from the games, and the questions below list every one. The others follow the same patterns, are not official, and this page has no tie to Capcom.

How to choose Mega Man names

  • Start with the job. The first Robot Masters were working robots before anyone sent them into battle (Cut Man felled timber, Guts Man did construction), so pick the trade first: Sawmill Man cuts timber, Hydrant Man puts out fires, Semaphore Man directs traffic.
  • Build a roster of eight with a weakness chain, where each boss's weapon beats the next boss. Opposed elements make the chain easy to read: Kiln Man melts Glacier Man, and Glacier Man freezes Geyser Man.
  • Name the weapon after the boss. Keep the theme word and change the second word to say what the shot does: Quartz Man gives Quartz Shard, and Monsoon Woman gives Monsoon Burst.
  • Keep the theme word short and concrete. One or two syllables read well on a stage select screen, as in Fog Man, Weld Man and Opal Woman.
  • For a NetNavi, take a computing word and close it up with .EXE, as in Glitch.EXE or PacketMan.EXE. For a hero's family and rivals, use music terms such as Chord, Cadence and Waltz so the cast sounds related.

Frequently asked questions

How are Robot Master names built?

A Robot Master has two words: a theme, then Man or Woman. The theme is usually a thing, a force or an action, now and then a quality (Quick Man), and it sets the stage, the attack pattern and the weapon the boss leaves behind. Sleet Man, Pulley Man and Lantern Woman from this list all follow that rule.

Which names in the list are from the games?

Thirty of them: Mega Man, Proto Man, Cut Man, Guts Man, Ice Man, Bomb Man, Fire Man, Elec Man, Metal Man, Air Man, Bubble Man, Quick Man, Crash Man, Flash Man, Heat Man, Wood Man and Splash Woman; Rock, Roll, Bass, Treble, Rush, Beat, Tango, Eddie and Auto; Dr. Light, Dr. Wily and Dr. Cossack; and MegaMan.EXE. They are there as a reference for the patterns. The other names are not official.

What are the names that end in .EXE?

They are NetNavis in the style of the Mega Man Battle Network games, where the hero is written MegaMan.EXE. In the games a Navi name is one closed-up word followed by .EXE, most often a Robot Master name without the space. The Navis in this list take computing terms instead: Query.EXE, Bitmap.EXE and RouterMan.EXE are examples.

Can I use these names in a fan game or a tabletop campaign?

Yes, they are meant for your own bosses, helpers, Navis and stages in fan games, fan fiction and role-playing. This page has no tie to Capcom. If you plan to publish something, leave out the thirty names from the games and check for yourself that your choice is not already in use elsewhere.
