Royal Rank Name Generator
Royal, noble and court titles for any realm
Generate royal ranks and noble titles with no personal names attached: real ones such as Archduke, Margravine, Maharani and Lord Chamberlain, and invented fantasy ranks such as Sun-Regent and Warden-Duchess, for building a court hierarchy.
About royal rank names
A royal rank is a rung on a ladder, and every court built its own ladder. The British peerage runs duke, marquess, earl, viscount, baron, and because English never coined a feminine form of earl, an earl's wife is a countess. German has two words that English flattens into prince: a Fürst heads a princely house and ranks below a Herzog (duke), while a Prinz is a member of a ruling family. A Kurfürst was one of the electors who chose the Holy Roman Emperor. No single order of precedence fits them all, so treat each tradition as its own system.
About six in ten entries here are real titles, given bare with no personal names or lands attached: sovereigns (Shahanshah, Negus, Tlatoani), heirs and consorts (Dauphin, Infanta, Queen Dowager), peerages with their feminine forms (Marquess and Marchioness, Landgraf and Landgräfin), and court offices such as Lord Chamberlain and Master of the Horse.
The rest are invented for fantasy courts: compounds and coinages such as Sun-Regent, Warden-Duchess, Thronewarden and Keeper of the Amber Seal. Most give themselves away by a hyphen, an element or a beast, but an invented court office can sound as real as Master of the Horse, and entries are not labeled. Mix the two freely, but look a title up before treating it as historical.
How to choose royal rank names
- Take the top of the ladder from one tradition and stay with it. Kaiser, Kurfürst, Herzog, Graf and Freiherr read as one court, while a Shah ruling over a Jarl reads as two realms that met.
- Decide what each feminine title means in your setting. Queen Regnant rules in her own right, Queen Consort is married to the ruler, and Queen Dowager is a ruler's widow, so one court can hold all three.
- Five to seven landed ranks are enough for most stories. Fill the rest of the court with offices such as Cupbearer, Mistress of the Robes and Keeper of the Privy Purse, which show who has the ruler's ear without owning any land.
- Use an invented title where your world has something history lacks: Dragon-Regent for a court that answers to a dragon, Tide-Queen for a sea people, Heir-Designate where the crown is not inherited by birth.
- Many real titles here are still held today, among them Oba, Kabaka, Emir and Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The list was de-duplicated and screened, but it is not a reference work, so look a title up before you rely on its exact rank or use.
Frequently asked questions
What is the order of royal and noble ranks?
There is no single order. The British peerage runs duke, marquess, earl, viscount, baron, all below the royal family, while continental systems add ranks such as Archduke, Grand Duke, Margrave and Landgrave and place a prince at different heights. For a fictional court, pick one ladder and keep it consistent.
Are these royal titles real or made up?
Both. About six in ten are real titles, some in their English form (Archduke, Margravine, Lord Chamberlain) and many in their own language (Sebastokrator, Maharani, Asantehene). The rest, such as Sun-Regent, Warden-Duchess, Thronewarden and Voice of the Throne, are made up for fantasy courts. A hyphenated title built on an element, a beast or a fae court is invented, but invented court offices follow the pattern of real ones and entries are not labeled, so look a title up before you treat it as historical.
What are the feminine forms of noble titles?
In English they are Duke and Duchess, Marquess and Marchioness, Earl and Countess, Viscount and Viscountess, Baron and Baroness. German adds an ending, as in Landgraf and Landgräfin or Fürst and Fürstin, and other pairs in the list include Tsar and Tsaritsa, Maharaja and Maharani, Emir and Emira. A feminine title can mark a woman who holds the rank herself or the wife of a man who does.
Does the list include personal names or lands?
No. Every entry is a bare rank, office or style, such as Crown Prince, Lord Chamberlain or Serene Highness, so you can attach your own character and territory. For titled people with given names and houses, use the Royal Name Generator or the Noble Name Generator instead.
