Call Sign Name Generator

"Call sign" means three different things, and this generator covers all of them. In fighter and naval aviation it is a pilot's nickname, used on the radio and painted under the canopy. In ground and joint operations it is a tactical identifier for a unit or vehicle (Bravo Two-Zero, Overlord Actual). And in aviation and amateur radio it is a formatted alphanumeric identifier assigned by a regulator, such as N4RC or G-EZFH.

Pilot call signs are the ones people usually want, and they are almost never chosen by the pilot. Squadrons hold naming ceremonies where a new aviator's mistakes, looks, hometown, or a pun on their real name become permanent. That is why real call signs are far more often "Skids", "Waffle", "Wrongway", or "Bob" than "Viper". A menacing name is usually a sign the pilot picked it, which is why the Top Gun style (Maverick, Iceman) reads as Hollywood. Tactical call signs follow the NATO phonetic alphabet plus a number, or a squadron code word plus a position (Talon Lead, Viper Two). "Actual" after a call sign means the commander personally, not the radio operator. Ham radio call signs begin with a national prefix (K, W, N for the US, G for the UK, VE for Canada, JA for Japan) followed by a digit and suffix letters.
