About unit names

Real military unit names follow a surprisingly small set of patterns, and once you know them, invented units start sounding authentic. The most common is the numbered formation: an ordinal number, an arm of service, and an echelon, as in "3rd Mountain Division" or "27th Pathfinder Company." Layered on top of that is the nickname, usually in quotation marks or standing on its own after decades of use. The 1st Infantry Division is "The Big Red One," the 101st Airborne is "The Screaming Eagles," and the 34th is "Red Bull." Nicknames come from shoulder patches, battle honors, hometowns, or a commander's turn of phrase.

Special-operations and modern units use a different register: task forces, detachments, and strike teams named for animals, tools, or NATO phonetic letters. "Task Force Viper" and "Detachment Kilo" sound modern precisely because they are short and deliberately unromantic. Older armies went the other way. British regiments carried the names of dukes, counties, and monarchs ("The King's Own Highland Rifles"), Roman legions took a number plus an epithet ("Legio IX Ferrata," the Ironclad Ninth), and fantasy settings borrow from both.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the echelon to the size you mean: a squad is 8-12 soldiers, a platoon 30-40, a company 100-200, a battalion 500-1,000, a brigade or regiment 3,000-5,000, and a division 10,000-20,000.
  • Pair a dry official designation with a colorful nickname, like "7th Armored Division 'Ironhorse'." The contrast reads as lived-in history rather than invention.
  • Nicknames earned from a battle, a patch, or an insult ("Desert Rats," "Bloody Bucket") feel more authentic than nicknames that just sound tough.
  • For special forces and modern thrillers, keep it clipped: Task Force, Detachment, Element, or Section plus a single codeword.
  • In fantasy or sci-fi, anchor the name to the setting: a lord's household guard, a Roman-style numbered legion, or an orbital drop battalion tells readers what kind of world they are in.
