About random civilization names

Civilizations are almost never named by the people living in them. "Sumer" comes from the Akkadian word for the region, "Aztec" was popularised by later scholars, and "Byzantine" was invented a century after the empire fell. Most names we use come from four sources: a founding people or tribe (Assyrian, Mongol, Norse), a ruling dynasty (Han, Tang, Ottoman after Osman), a capital city or river (Babylonian, Indus Valley, Great Zimbabwe), or a form of government (the Roman Republic, the Achaemenid Empire, the Aztec Triple Alliance).

Those same patterns make invented civilizations sound real. A people-name plus a political noun (Vaelorian Hegemony, Talvaran Confederacy) reads as a scholar's label. A dynasty name (the Ondrathi Dynasty, the Amber Dynasty) suggests a long history with rulers who could be listed. A geographic name (the Reef Cities, the Salt Kingdoms, the Riverine Cities of Ur-Kalath) tells you where the culture lives and what it depends on. A descriptive epithet (the Drowned Empire, the Sea Peoples of Kadran) sounds like a name given by frightened neighbours, which is often exactly the tone you want.

When you choose one, decide whether the name is what the civilization calls itself or what outsiders call it, and use both in your world; the gap between the two is a story in itself.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pair a people-name with the right political noun: empires conquer, kingdoms inherit, republics and leagues trade, confederacies and khanates unite tribes, theocracies and caliphates rule by faith.
  • Give a civilization an endonym (what it calls itself) and an exonym (what neighbours call it), such as the Sarantine Empire that its enemies call the Silent Empire.
  • Use a geographic root (river, sea, mountain, resource) for early civilizations and dynasty or founder names for later, more centralised ones.
  • For strategy games or campaign settings, keep names to two or three words so they fit on maps and score screens.
  • Borrow real naming structures rather than real names; "the Twin Thrones of Ardis" echoes the Aztec Triple Alliance without copying it.

Frequently asked questions

How do civilizations get their names?

Usually from outsiders or later historians, based on a founding people (Assyrians), a ruling dynasty (Han, Ottoman), a capital or river (Babylon, Indus Valley), or a form of government (Roman Republic). The people themselves often used a different name entirely.

Are these real civilizations or made up?

Both. Roughly the first quarter of the list are real historical civilizations, from Sumer to the Mississippian culture, useful for history projects and trivia. The rest are invented names built on the same conventions for worldbuilding and games.

Can I use these civilization names in my game or novel?

Yes. All invented names are free for personal and commercial use. Real historical names are public knowledge and can be used freely too, though you may want to check how a specific setting or publisher treats real cultures.

What is the difference between an empire, a kingdom, a dynasty, and a civilization?

A civilization is the whole culture over time. A kingdom is a single realm under a monarch, an empire is a state ruling over many peoples, and a dynasty is one ruling family within a state. China is one civilization that has had many dynasties and been both a kingdom and an empire.
