Real empires were almost never called "empire" by the people living in them. Rome was simply Res Publica or Imperium Romanum; the Ottomans called their state the Sublime State; China was the Middle Kingdom under a dynastic name like Tang or Ming. Fantasy empires feel most convincing when they follow one of the same three patterns: named for the founding people or house (Aurelian Empire, Valdric Imperium), named for a capital or heartland (Empire of Kesh, Imperium of Sarn), or named by a grand epithet that tells you what the empire believes about itself (Empire of the Eternal Flame, Thousand-Year Empire, Mandate of Heaven).

The title word matters as much as the name. Imperium and Hegemony sound Roman and militaristic; Dominion suggests something colder and more bureaucratic; Khanate, Caliphate, Shogunate, and Tsardom instantly move the empire to a different part of the map; Holy or Celestial tells you priests are involved. Adjectives like Old, Restored, Fallen, or Successor imply centuries of history in a single word, which is exactly what you want when a character glances at a map.

The names above are grouped so you can pull a whole timeline: an Old Empire, the Successor states that fought over its corpse, and the New Empire that finally reunited them. Give the empire a short colloquial name (Valdria, the Imperium) and a long official one for treaties and heralds, and the world will feel lived in.
