Generate random continent names for fantasy worlds, sci-fi settings, and map-making, following the sound of real continents (Europa, Asia, Australia, Gondwana) and classic fantasy landmasses like Westeros, Faerûn, and Tamriel.
About random continent names
Real continent names are short, ancient, and mostly Latin or Greek in shape: Europa, Asia, Africa, Australia ("southern land"), Antarctica ("opposite the Bear"), America (after Amerigo Vespucci). Geologists follow suit for lost supercontinents: Pangaea, Gondwana, Laurentia, Rodinia. The pattern is a two-to-four-syllable word ending in -a, -ia, or -is, which is why so many fantasy continents (Westeros, Essos, Faerûn, Tamriel, Thedas) still sound related even when the worlds are nothing alike.
There are two other useful models. Old European maps used descriptive Latin labels like Terra Australis Incognita and Ultima Thule for lands nobody had reached, and that style (the Great Southern Land, the Undiscovered Country) suits continents that are rumoured rather than mapped. Fantasy also uses in-world epithets, the way Tolkien's Middle-earth sits between the Undying Lands and the East, so a continent may be "the Sunder" or "the Frozen North" to everyone who lives on it, with the formal name reserved for scholars.
A continent name has to carry the weight of everything on it, so keep it plain. The kingdoms, cities, and rivers get the flourishes; the landmass just needs to be pronounceable, distinct from the others on your map, and easy to say a thousand times.
Tips for choosing a name
- Keep continent names to two or three syllables and give the elaborate names to the kingdoms and cities on them; Westeros works because everything on it is more specific.
- Make sure each continent on your world starts with a different letter and ends in a different sound so readers never confuse them.
- Use a Latin or Greek-shaped name (ending in -ia, -a, -os, -is) for the formal name and a descriptive epithet (the Ashlands, the Far Shore) for what locals call it.
- Decide who named the continent; a landmass named by explorers from across the sea sounds different from one named by the people who never left it.
- Say the name with "the continent of" and "across" in front of it, since that is how it will appear in dialogue and travel narration.
Frequently asked questions
How are real continents named?
Mostly from Greek, Latin, or older regional words: Europa and Asia come from ancient Greek usage, Africa from a Roman province, America from Amerigo Vespucci, Australia from Latin for "southern land," and Antarctica from Greek for "opposite the Bear" (the northern constellation). Supercontinents like Pangaea and Gondwana were named by geologists in the same classical style.
What makes a fantasy continent name sound good?
Short length, a classical ending like -ia, -os, or -a, and easy pronunciation. Westeros, Faerûn, Tamriel, and Thedas all follow this pattern. Save long descriptive names for regions and let the continent itself stay simple.
Can I use these continent names in my book, game, or D&D world?
Yes. All names here are free for personal and commercial use. A few are borrowed from real geology or legend (Pangaeon, Rodinia, Lemuria, Hyperborea) and are public domain, but you may want a wholly invented name if you need to trademark a setting.
How many continents should a fantasy world have?
Earth has seven by the usual count, but most fantasy worlds name two to four and leave the rest as rumour. One home continent for the main story, one distant land for trade or invasion, and one legendary or lost continent covers almost every plot need.
