Ancient Persian Name Generator
Names from Cyrus to the last Sasanian kings
Browse 1,000 names from pre-Islamic Iran: Achaemenid kings and satraps such as Darius, Atossa and Tissaphernes, Parthian rulers like Vologases and Orodes, Sasanian names like Shapur, Boran and Kartir, and Avestan heroes such as Thraetaona. For historical fiction, tabletop campaigns and worldbuilding.
About ancient Persian names
Ancient Persian names span over a thousand years, from the Median and Achaemenid kings through the Parthian Arsacids to the last Sasanians. Most early ones reach us through Greek writers, which is why Kurush is known as Cyrus, Darayavaush as Darius and Khshayarsha as Xerxes. The list gives the familiar Greek or English form, plus the Old Persian form where royal inscriptions record it: the Behistun text names Vidarna, Utana and Gaubaruva, the men Herodotus calls Hydarnes, Otanes and Gobryas.
Many names have two parts. Arta, the word for truth, opens Artaxerxes, Artabazus and Artaphernes, and the god Mithra stands in Mithridates. A man was identified by his father, so the list keeps forms such as Otanes son of Pharnaspes, and the Sasanian style adds -an to the father's name: Ardashir i Papakan is Ardashir son of Papak. Royal women's names often end in a word for daughter, as in Azarmidokht and Perozdukht.
The 1,000 entries mix Achaemenid royalty, the satraps and generals of Herodotus, Xenophon and the Alexander historians, Parthian and Sasanian kings, queens, priests and commanders, and Avestan names from Zoroastrian scripture. Three small groups are literary or legendary: the court names of the Book of Esther, characters of Xenophon's Cyropaedia such as Abradatas and Pantheia, and epic heroes such as Rostam and Zal.
How to choose ancient Persian names
- Match the form to the point of view: Greek and Latin forms such as Xerxes, Sapor and Chosroes suit a Greek or Roman narrator, while Khshayarsha, Shabuhr and Husraw suit a Persian one.
- Keep a cast inside one period. Hystaspes, Otanes and Atossa are Achaemenid; Vologases, Orodes and Surena are Parthian; Shapur, Kartir and Boran are Sasanian, centuries later.
- For minor characters borrow the pattern, not the person: pair two names as 'son of' for an Achaemenid setting, or add -an to the father's name for a Sasanian one, as in Kavad i Perozan.
- Entries with an office, such as Bessus, Satrap of Bactria or Shapur Sakanshah, name one historical holder. Swap in your own province or title when the character is your invention.
- Avestan names such as Thraetaona, Keresaspa and Frashaoshtra read as older and more sacred than court names, so they suit priests, myths and ancestors.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real ancient Persian names?
The list draws on names recorded in ancient sources (royal inscriptions such as Behistun, Greek and Roman historians, Parthian and Sasanian coins and inscriptions, and the Avesta), and no new compounds were coined for it. About three in ten entries are a name that is also listed alone, given here with a father, an office or an epithet, and the Sasanian forms in -an, such as Jamasp i Perozan, pair a real father and son by the pattern of the period even where no surviving text writes them that way. Confirm a name in a reference work before you rely on it in published history. Esther's court names such as Vashti and Memucan, Darius the Mede of the Book of Daniel, Xenophon's characters and epic heroes such as Rostam are literary or legendary.
Why do some kings appear under more than one name?
The same king was written differently in each language. Darius is the Latin and English form, by way of Greek Dareios, of Old Persian Darayavaush, and the Sasanian Shapur is Shabuhr in Middle Persian and Sapor in Latin. The list also holds throne names with their epithets, such as Artaxerxes Mnemon and Khosrow Anushirvan. Pick one style for your story and stay with it.
Did ancient Persians have surnames?
Not family surnames in the modern sense. People were identified by their father, their people or their office, as in Mardonius son of Gobryas, Datis the Mede or Gobryas the Patischorian. Under the Parthians and Sasanians the great noble houses worked like clan names, which is why you will see Sukhra Karen, Shapur Mihran and Mihr-Narseh Suren.
Which of the names are women's names?
Achaemenid women include Atossa, Artystone, Parysatis, Stateira and Amestris. Parthian royal women include Musa and Rhodogune, and Sasanian women include Denag, Boran, Azarmidokht and Shapurdukhtag. From the Avesta come Hutaosa and Pouruchista. Many entries spell the relation out, as in Roxana daughter of Oxyartes.
