Surnames carry the second half of the story. English occupational and place names (Whitfield, Hartley, Pemberton) read Anglo-American; Irish and Scottish names (O'Connell, Gallagher, MacLeod) suggest a different family line; Italian, Polish, Nigerian, Indian, Arabic and Scandinavian surnames (Moretti, Kowalski, Okafor, Sharma, Haddad, Lindqvist) place a character in a particular diaspora or country. Pairing a first name and surname from the same tradition sounds authentic; mixing them (Priya Castellanos, Saoirse Delgado) sounds like a modern, multicultural family.
