About fairy tale names
Fairy tale names work differently from fantasy names. The old tales were told aloud, so most characters are simply what they are: the Miller's Daughter, the Youngest Son, the Goose Girl, Little Red Riding Hood. When a name does appear it is usually a plain village name from the teller's own country, which is why Grimm gives us Hans, Gretel, Else and Jorinde, Perrault gives Finette and Ricky, Afanasyev gives Ivan, Vasilisa and Marya, and the Norwegian tales give Espen Askeladd. Descriptive nicknames carry the rest of the weight: Cinderella, Snow White, Tatterhood, Cap o' Rushes, Koschei the Deathless.
The second register is the aristocratic one of the French salon tales and Andersen: Florine, Belle-Etoile, Princess Printaniere, Prince Charmant. Flower, jewel and season names suit these royals, and a single epithet (the Fair, the Wise, the Patient) does the work of a surname. Witches and helpers get homely titles, Mother Holle, Frau Trude, Old Nan, while villains get something with a growl in it, Bluebeard, Rumpelstiltskin, Baba Yaga.
This list gathers the canon from German, French, Danish, English, Celtic, Italian and Slavic tradition and adds original names in each of those registers, from Gretchen Applebough and Clever Agnethe to Skarrow the Goblin King and Princess Celandine.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the name to the character's station: plain village names (Hans, Lotte, Jan) for heroes and heroines, flower or jewel names for princesses, and a title plus homely noun (Mother Nettlewort, Goody Pinchpenny) for old women and helpers.
- Let the villain's name sound wrong in the mouth: clusters like -stilt-, -skin, -gob and -grim (Rumpelstiltskin, Gristlebeard, Grumbold) read as threatening without any explanation.
- Use a descriptive epithet instead of a surname; Tatterhood, Donkeyskin and Koschei the Deathless tell you the whole story in a word, which is exactly how oral tales worked.
- Keep the naming tradition consistent within one tale: a Russian setting wants Ivan, Vasilisa and Tsar Berendey, not Hans and Gretel; a French court tale wants Florine and Prince Cheri.
- Leave some characters unnamed on purpose (the Woodcutter, the Old King, the Seventh Daughter) and spend named attention only on the two or three who matter.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a name sound like it belongs in a fairy tale?
Simplicity and description. The classic tales use ordinary first names from their country of origin (Hans, Gretel, Ivan, Jack, Molly) and describe everyone else by trade, birth order or appearance: the Miller's Daughter, the Youngest Son, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White. Royal characters get flower, jewel or light names (Aurora, Florine, Belle), and villains get harsh, growling sounds like Rumpelstiltskin or Bluebeard. Avoid invented high-fantasy syllables; they sound like a different genre.
Where do the classic fairy tale names come from?
Mainly from the Brothers Grimm (German: Rapunzel, Hansel, Gretel, Allerleirauh, Frau Holle), Charles Perrault and the French salon writers such as Madame d'Aulnoy (Cinderella, Puss in Boots, Bluebeard, Florine, the Yellow Dwarf), Hans Christian Andersen (Kai, Gerda, Thumbelina), Alexander Afanasyev's Russian collections (Vasilisa, Ivan Tsarevich, Baba Yaga, Koschei), Asbjornsen and Moe in Norway (Askeladden, Tatterhood), Basile's Pentamerone in Italy (Zezolla, Petrosinella) and Joseph Jacobs's English tales (Tom Tit Tot, Molly Whuppie, Cap o' Rushes).
Can I use these names for a fairy tale princess or prince?
Yes. The list includes classic royalty (Briar Rose, Snow White, Prince Charming, Tsar Saltan, King Thrushbeard) and many original princes and princesses with storybook flower, jewel and old European names such as Princess Celandine, Prince Florizel, Princess Elowen and Prince Casimir. Pair the name with a place epithet (Rosamund of the Glass Hill) or a single virtue (Yelena the Fair) for extra period flavor.
Are these names good for fairy tale retellings and bedtime stories?
That is what they are built for. For a retelling, keep the canonical name of the lead (Rapunzel, Gretel, Vasilisa) and use original names here for the side characters the original left unnamed, such as the stepsisters, the huntsman or the neighbouring prince. For original bedtime stories, pick a plain hero name, one comic helper name like Pip Pennyroyal and one villain name with a growl, and let everyone else be the Baker, the Queen or the Wolf.
