Disney princess names follow a pattern that is easy to feel and hard to fake. Almost every one is two or three syllables with open vowels and a soft ending: Aurora, Ariel, Jasmine, Tiana, Moana, Raya. Many carry a meaning tied to the story. Moana is Polynesian for ocean, Raya is Malay for grand (as in Hari Raya), Tiana is a short form of Tatiana or Christiana, Elsa and Anna come from Scandinavian tradition to match Arendelle, and Belle is simply French for beautiful. The rule of thumb is that the name should sound like it came from the film's setting, not from a generic fairy tale.

The official lineup is small: Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Moana and Raya, with Anna, Elsa and Asha usually counted alongside them.
