Generate fairy names drawn from flower folklore, Celtic and Shakespearean fae tradition, and modern pixie-hollow whimsy. Ideal for fairy characters in stories, D&D fey NPCs, fairy gardens, and fairy door letters for kids.
About fairy names
Fairy names sit at the meeting point of three traditions. The oldest is folklore: Celtic and Welsh fae like Aine, Niamh, Rhiannon and Cliodhna, and the courtly fairies Shakespeare put on stage in A Midsummer Night's Dream, where Titania and Oberon rule over attendants named Peaseblossom, Cobweb, Moth and Mustardseed. The second is the Victorian and Edwardian flower-fairy tradition, popularised by Cicely Mary Barker, where a fairy is simply named for the plant she tends: Foxglove, Snapdragon, Cowslip, Elderflower. The third is modern children's fantasy, from Tinker Bell and the Disney Fairies (Silvermist, Iridessa, Periwinkle) to whimsical invented names built from small, bright words like Wisp, Pip and Twinkle.
Good fairy names share a sound: short, light, full of soft consonants and open vowels, often ending in a trailing -a, -ie or -y. Nature words work because fairies are tied to a place: a hedgerow, a stream, a particular oak. Two-part names such as Poppy Dewbright or Fig Moonwhistle add a surname-like second element that describes what the fairy does or where it lives, which is handy when you need a whole fairy court or a cast for a picture book.
This generator mixes all three traditions so you can pull a delicate flower name for a fairy garden marker, a grander fae title for a D&D archfey, or a giggly two-word name for a fairy door letter.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the name to the fairy's domain: water fairies suit names like Ripple, Ondine or Mizzle, while hearth or fire sprites suit Ember, Cinder and Spark.
- For a fairy court or a large cast, give the ruler a folkloric name (Titania, Finvarra, Mab) and the attendants single-word nature names so hierarchy is obvious at a glance.
- Add a two-part surname (Thornwhistle, Dewbright, Featherfoot) when you need fairies to feel like a community rather than a list of flowers.
- For darker or trickster fae, avoid the cutesy end of the list and lean on thorny plants and Celtic names: Blackthorn, Nettle, Bramble, Etain.
- Say the name out loud with a diminutive suffix (-ling, -kin, -let) to test whether it still sounds like a fairy; if it collapses into a mouthful, pick something shorter.
Frequently asked questions
Where do traditional fairy names come from?
Most come from Celtic mythology (Aine, Niamh, Cliodhna, Finvarra), medieval romance (Morgan le Fay, Melusine, Nimue), or Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream (Titania, Oberon, Puck, Peaseblossom, Cobweb, Moth, Mustardseed). Flower-based names became popular through Cicely Mary Barker's Flower Fairies books in the 1920s.
What are good fairy names for a girl or a baby?
Real given names with fairy associations include Fay, Faye, Elowen, Seren, Eira, Niamh, Rhiannon, Aurelia, Luna and Willow. Flower and nature names like Poppy, Ivy, Hazel, Juniper and Clover are also widely used as legal first names.
Are fairy, pixie, sprite and fae names different?
In practice they overlap heavily. Pixie names tend to be the smallest and silliest (Pip, Fig, Bumble), fae or faerie names tend to be older and grander (Titania, Etain, Melusine), and sprite names usually lean toward elements like water, wind and light.
Can I use these fairy names in a book, game or product?
The folkloric and nature-based names are public domain and free to use anywhere. A few names on the list belong to specific franchises (Tinkerbell, Silvermist, Iridessa, Vidia, Zarina are Disney Fairies characters), so avoid those for commercial work.
