Fairy Name Generator

Fairy names sit at the meeting point of three traditions. The oldest is folklore: Celtic and Welsh fae like Aine, Niamh, Rhiannon and Cliodhna, and the courtly fairies Shakespeare put on stage in A Midsummer Night's Dream, where Titania and Oberon rule over attendants named Peaseblossom, Cobweb, Moth and Mustardseed. Good fairy names share a sound: short, light, full of soft consonants and open vowels, often ending in a trailing -a, -ie or -y. Nature words work because fairies are tied to a place: a hedgerow, a stream, a particular oak. Two-part names such as Poppy Dewbright or Fig Moonwhistle add a surname-like second element that describes what the fairy does or where it lives, which is handy when you need a whole fairy court or a cast for a picture book.
