About prince names

A prince's name does three jobs at once: it has to sound like it belongs to a ruling house, it has to sit comfortably after a title, and it usually carries a tag that tells you where he stands in the succession. Real princes were named after grandfathers and saints, which is why the same two dozen names (Edward, Henry, Frederick, Alexander, Louis, Casimir) cycle through European dynasties, and why a fantasy prince named Aldric or Caspian reads as royal while one named Kevin does not. The name was then extended with either a place (Edward of Woodstock, John of Gaunt, Prince Yusuf of Granada) or an epithet earned or mocked in his lifetime (the Bold, the Unready, the Navigator, the Younger).

Titles matter too. A crown prince is the named heir; a prince regent rules in a monarch's place; a prince consort married the queen; a dauphin is the French heir; a prince-elector or prince-bishop held a German principality. Using the right one tells the reader what kind of court you are writing.

This list mixes invented fantasy princes with epithets and lands, plain title-and-name styles such as Prince Casimir for your own house, ranks from Crown Prince to Prince Regent, and historical princes from Wales, Rus, Iberia, the Islamic world, India and East Asia for flavour.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide the prince's position before the name: Crown Prince Leander signals the heir, Prince Regent Corwin signals a power behind the throne, and a plain Prince Thane the Second Son signals a spare. The title does half the characterisation.
  • Match the given name to your setting's culture. Caspian, Aldric and Emeric suit a Western European fantasy court; Rurik, Mstislav and Yaroslav suit a northern or Slavic one; Tariq, Faisal and Idris suit a desert kingdom. Mixing registers inside one family breaks the illusion.
  • Epithets should be earned in the story or inherited as an embarrassment. The Bold, the Pious and the Builder work for a finished reign; the Unready, the Bastard Prince and the Lost Heir work better for a character with something to prove.
  • Avoid naming your fantasy prince exactly after a famous real one (Vlad of Transylvania, Shaka of the Zulu). Use them as models for structure, then change the name or the land.
  • Say the full style out loud: Prince Cassian of Vellmoor and Prince Silas the Grey scan well; a three-part name with a long place and a long epithet will be trimmed by readers to something shorter, so pick what you want that short form to be.

Frequently asked questions

What are good fantasy prince names?

Names with a classical or medieval feel that are not tied to one famous real person work best: Aldric, Caspian, Theron, Lucan, Evander, Emeric, Oswin, Corvin, Valerian, Leoric. Add a land or an epithet to finish the style, as in Prince Lucan of the Silver Reach or Prince Aurelian the Golden.

How are real princes named?

Most historical princes were named for ancestors and patron saints, then distinguished by a birthplace or territory (Edward of Woodstock, John of Gaunt, Llywelyn of Gwynedd) or an epithet (Henry the Navigator, Yaroslav the Wise, Radu the Handsome). Crown princes in some countries also carried a territorial title, such as Prince of Wales or Prince of Asturias.

What is the difference between a crown prince, a prince regent and a prince consort?

A crown prince is the designated heir to the throne. A prince regent governs on behalf of a monarch who is a child, absent or unable to rule. A prince consort is the husband of a reigning queen and has no claim to rule himself. Writers can use these titles to signal a character's power and ambitions at a glance.

Can I use these names for a D&D or fairy-tale character?

Yes. The epithet and land styles suit an NPC whose reputation precedes him (Prince Percival the Unsmiling, Prince Viktor the Unyielding), while the house-surname styles (Prince Caspian Thornewood, Prince Oswin Greyhaven) suit a player character whose story is still being written. Drop the title if your game only allows a plain name.
