Generate names for elven kings, high kings and woodland lords in fantasy fiction, D&D and games: titled kings like King Ithrandel Dawnthrone, regnal names like Thaloruen III of the Silver Bough, high kings like High King Vaeloren the Evergreen and heirs like Crown Prince Thimurel.

About elf king names

An elven king's name usually does three jobs: a title or numeral says he rules, a long, soft-sounding given name says he is an elf, and a byname says what kind of court he keeps. High elf kings lean on light and metal, as in King Ithrandel Dawnthrone or Calthumir of the Diamond Circlet. Wood elf kings are named for trees, antlers and seasons, as in Stag King Cervannoch or Haldrenorn of the Antlered Throne.

Fantasy elves live for centuries, so a reign reads like an era, and this list of 1,000 names has regnal numerals and dynasties (Thaloruen III of the Silver Bough), high kings set over several realms (High King Vaeloren the Evergreen), epithets earned over a long life (King Caeroth the Undying) and entries written as a chronicle records a lost ruler, such as Thuvarel, Last King of Ysmerande. Sea, moon and snow courts, some dark elf and fallen kings and a few title-only kings, like The King Under Leaves, round it out.

Princes, regents and heirs have their own entries, from Prince Regent Aelovar to Elquiron Kingsson. Apart from six well-known kings named in the FAQ, the given names are invented in a general elven style and are not tied to one setting, so they suit a homebrew world as easily as a D&D campaign.

How to choose elf king names

  • Pick the court before the name. A high elf king suits light, sky and jewel bynames (Elorathis Brightscepter), a wood elf king suits trees and antlers (King Brannuvoth Oakcirclet), and a sea or snow king suits a compound title such as Tide King Maralthuin or Frost King Hrimveldir.
  • Use a regnal numeral for instant history. Aemrithor II of House Vellunath tells the reader an earlier Aemrithor ruled before him, and for a people who live a very long time even a low numeral implies an old realm.
  • Save the full style for heralds and treaties. In dialogue most characters will say only the given name or 'the King', so say the short form aloud and make sure it still sounds right.
  • Let the title do plot work. A high king needs lesser kings under him, a regent needs an absent or sleeping ruler, and a king in exile needs a lost realm, so choose High King, Prince Regent or an entry like King Esmathor in Exile only when the story has the other half.
  • For a dark elf or fallen king, change the materials rather than adding menace: obsidian, onyx and ash in place of silver and sunlight, as in Belzurion of the Onyx Circlet.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for an elf king?

Names that pair a clear royal marker with one strong image work well: King Ithrandel Dawnthrone, Haldrenorn of the Antlered Throne, High King Vaeloren the Evergreen or King Caeroth the Undying. For something shorter, a bare regnal name such as Ysilvar IV reads as royal without any title.

Are any of these kings from books or games?

Six are, and they are there as familiar reference points. Thranduil, Oropher, Thingol and Gil-galad come from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, Finubar is a Phoenix King in Warhammer Fantasy, and Anasterian Sunstrider is the high king of Quel'Thalas in the Warcraft universe. The Erlking of European folklore also appears in a handful of entries. The other names are written in a general elven style, though on a list this long a chance match with a published character is always possible.

Does the list include elf princes and heirs?

Yes. About one name in ten is a prince, a regent or an heir, including Crown Prince Thimurel, Prince Regent Aelovar and Tirruvain, King's Heir. Elven queens and princesses have their own generator on the site.

What is the difference between a king, a high king and a prince regent?

In most fantasy settings a king rules one realm, while a high king is set over several realms or kindreds that keep their own rulers. A prince regent governs in place of a king who is too young, absent or, in elven stories, asleep for an age. The list has entries for each, such as Great King Ivaldren of the Twin Forests and Regent Hesmuvar for the Child King.
