Creation myths around the world start from an undifferentiated state, and the images cultures reached for were the ocean (Nun, Apsu, Tiamat, Hydros), darkness (Nyx, Erebus, Te Po), a gap or chasm (Chaos, Ginnungagap) and a cosmic egg (Pangu, Hiranyagarbha, Phanes).
