Generate Greek god names from the whole pantheon: the twelve Olympians, Titans and primordials, sea and river gods, Muses, Fates and personified spirits, plus cult epithets and original deities with authentic Greek phonology for fantasy worlds and games.
About greek god names
The Greek pantheon is far bigger than the twelve Olympians. Hesiod's Theogony alone names primordials (Chaos, Nyx, Gaia), a generation of Titans (Hyperion, Mnemosyne, Themis), dozens of Oceanids and Nereids, and a crowd of daimones who personify single ideas: Nike for victory, Nemesis for retribution, Hypnos for sleep, Kairos for the right moment. Most of those names are simply the Greek word for the thing, which is why the gods of abstract concepts (Eirene, Dike, Elpis) sound so clean and direct.
Real worshippers rarely called on a bare name. Each city and cult attached an epithet that fixed the god's role: Zeus Xenios protected guests, Athena Promachos fought in the front rank, Artemis Agrotera ruled the hunt, Hermes Psychopompos guided the dead. Borrowing this pattern is the quickest way to make an invented deity feel Greek rather than generic.
The original names here follow Greek sound rules: masculine endings in -os, -eus, -ios and -ion (Thalorion, Kalistheus, Pelagios), feminine endings in -a, -e, -eia, -ope and -ike (Meliandra, Kymodike, Thalassiope), and compounds built from real roots such as thalassa (sea), nyx (night), kalli- (beautiful), pyr (fire) and -machos (fighter).
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide first whether you want an actual deity or a Greek-sounding original. Canonical names carry baggage (Ares is violent, Hermes is sly); an invented name like Orithale lets you define the domain yourself.
- Pair a name with a cult epithet to show function: Zeus Horkios (of oaths), Apollo Smintheus (of mice and plague), Hecate Chthonia (of the underworld). For an original god, build the epithet from a Greek root or a plain English title.
- For personified concepts, use the Greek noun itself: Soteria (safety), Techne (craft), Aergia (idleness). These need no invention and sound instantly authentic.
- Match spelling to tone. Latinised forms (Cronus, Hecate, Dionysus) read as classic and familiar; transliterated Greek (Kronos, Hekate, Dionysos) reads as scholarly or archaic. Pick one system and keep it consistent.
- Avoid names already taken by monsters or mortals in the myths (Medusa, Iokaste) unless you want the association; readers who know the stories will bring it with them.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real Greek gods or made-up names?
Both. Roughly two thirds are attested deities, Titans, nymphs and personified spirits from Hesiod, Homer, the Homeric Hymns and later sources, including cult epithets such as Zeus Olympios and Athena Parthenos. The rest are original names assembled from Greek roots and endings so they sit naturally beside the real ones.
What is the difference between a Greek god and a Titan?
Titans are the generation before the Olympians, children of Gaia and Ouranos such as Cronus, Rhea, Hyperion and Mnemosyne. The Olympians, led by Zeus, overthrew them. Some Titans (Helios, Leto, Themis) kept their roles under the new order, and the primordials (Nyx, Gaia, Erebus) are older than both.
Why do some names have a second word like Xenios or Promachos?
Those are epithets, the titles Greeks used in prayer and cult to address one aspect of a god. Zeus Xenios is Zeus as protector of guests, Artemis Orthia is the Spartan Artemis, Hermes Psychopompos is Hermes as guide of souls. They are useful when a story or game needs a specific face of a familiar god.
Can I use these names for a fantasy pantheon or a D&D game?
Yes. The original names (Kalistheus, Nyctoreus, Eurynessa) are free to use and designed for that. If you use canonical gods, consider giving them local epithets or swapping a domain so your pantheon feels distinct rather than a copy of the myths.
