God names carry the fingerprints of the languages that first spoke them. Greek gods end in -os, -eus, or -on and often describe a function (Hypnos is sleep, Thanatos is death). Norse names are clipped and hard, one or two syllables that survive shouting across a longship. Egyptian names arrive through Greek transcription, so Ra, Ptah, and Amun feel stripped down, while Nahuatl names like Huitzilopochtli and Tezcatlipoca are long compounds meaning 'hummingbird of the south' and 'smoking mirror'. Hindu names frequently are the domain itself: Agni means fire, Vayu means wind.

Because a god's name was spoken in prayer, oaths, and curses, it almost always came with an epithet that told you which aspect you were addressing. Zeus Xenios protected guests; Odin Grimnir was the hooded wanderer; Amun-Ra was the hidden god fused with the sun. When you invent a god for a fantasy world, that pairing of a short name plus a title does most of the work: Ignaros the Forge-Father tells the reader the domain, the temperament, and the culture in three words.
