Generate villainous team names for your Pokemon fan game, fanfic, or Nuzlocke region: canon-style 'Team' names like Team Rocket, Team Galactic and Team Flare, plus shadowy foundations, syndicates and squads for a fresh antagonist organization.

About Pokemon evil team names

Every Pokemon region gets one villainous team, and almost all of them follow the same template: the word 'Team' plus a single punchy noun that hints at the gang's goal. Team Rocket is a crime syndicate named for ambition and reach, Team Aqua and Team Magma are named for the sea and land they want to expand, Team Galactic wants a new universe, Team Plasma preaches liberation with a name that sounds scientific, Team Flare wants a beautiful world, and Team Skull and Team Yell are punk-flavored names for gangs that are more nuisance than menace. Later games broke the pattern with corporate fronts like the Aether Foundation and Macro Cosmos, and spin-offs added Cipher, Team Snagem and Team Dim Sun.

The list below mixes those canon names with hundreds of originals built the same way: cosmic words (Nova, Quasar, Eclipse), geology and weather (Tectonic, Maelstrom, Permafrost), abstract ideals (Verity, Dominion, Ascension), and punk or criminal slang (Ruckus, Racket, Heist). There are also foundation, syndicate, brigade and single-word organization names for a fan region that needs something beyond 'Team'.

Match the name to the team's motive: a team draining the oceans should not be Team Blossom, and a scientific cult usually sounds better as an Order or Institute than as a gang.

How to choose Pokemon evil team names

  • Choose the team's goal first, then the word. Canon names are a one-word summary of motive: Aqua and Magma for sea and land, Galactic for a new universe, Flare for a 'beautiful' world.
  • Match the tone to the region. Punk-style names like Team Skull or Team Yell fit a loud, harmless gang; Latin and scientific words like Cipher, Plasma or Helix fit a cold, organized cult.
  • Give your admins and grunts a naming scheme that echoes the team name: Team Galactic used planets, Team Flare used colors, Team Aqua and Magma used pirate and geology words.
  • Avoid the exact canon name of an existing team in a fan game or region; use the same shape instead, such as a cosmic noun for a space cult or a weather word for an eco-terrorist group.
  • Say the grunt catchphrase out loud: 'Prepare for trouble' works with Team Rocket because the name is two short syllables. Three-syllable words like Galactic are the upper limit before it gets clunky.

Frequently asked questions

What are all the evil teams in the main Pokemon games?

Team Rocket (Kanto and Johto), Team Aqua and Team Magma (Hoenn), Team Galactic (Sinnoh), Team Plasma and Neo Plasma (Unova), Team Flare (Kalos), Team Skull and the Aether Foundation (Alola), Team Yell and Macro Cosmos (Galar), and Team Star (Paldea). Team Rainbow Rocket appears in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and Team GO Rocket is the Pokemon GO version.

Why do Pokemon evil teams start with 'Team'?

In Japanese they are called '-dan' (Rocket-dan, Aqua-dan, Galaxy-dan), a suffix meaning gang or corps. The localization chose 'Team' because it sounds like a sports squad, which fits the series' lighthearted tone even for villains. Spin-offs and newer games have moved toward corporate or cult names like Cipher, Aether Foundation and Macro Cosmos.

Can I use these names for a Pokemon fan game or ROM hack?

Yes. The original names in this list are free to use for fan games, fanfiction, Nuzlocke write-ups, and tabletop Pokemon campaigns. Just avoid reusing the exact canon team names as your own villains if you want players to feel they are in a new region.

How do I name the leader and admins of my evil team?

Canon teams usually give the boss and admins a themed set: Team Galactic's Cyrus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn; Team Flare's Xerosic and the scientists named for colors; Team Aqua's Archie, Matt and Shelly with nautical nicknames. Pick a theme that matches the team word and name the hierarchy from it.
