Generate names for plasmoid characters from D&D's Spelljammer: Adventures in Space. Plasmoids have no vocal cords, so their names are gurgles, bubbling sounds and borrowed words picked up from other species; this list covers all three styles.
About plasmoid names
Plasmoids are the amorphous ooze people introduced in Spelljammer: Adventures in Space for D&D 5e. They have no bones, can squeeze through a one-inch gap, and, most importantly for naming, have no vocal cords. According to the sourcebook they communicate through vibrations and gurgles and take names that are either the closest sounds they can produce, or words borrowed from the languages of the creatures around them. That gives three natural styles of plasmoid name.
The first is the wet, bubbly gurgle: names heavy on gl, bl, pl, oo and squ sounds like Glorbek, Blubbeth, Squelchik or Vlorsh. The second is the repeated syllable, imitating the sound of a plasmoid speaking through its own body: Glub-Glub, Plip-Plop, Sloop-Sloop. The third is the borrowed word, where a plasmoid adopts a term from Common that describes it or the ship it lives on: Puddle, Custard, Quicksilver, Ballast, Ladle. Many plasmoids also earn a descriptive second name from crewmates, such as Vlorsh Who-Fits-Anywhere or Blubbeth Many-Shapes.
The names above are grouped in that order so you can pick a purely alien gurgle for a Rock of Bral trader, a friendly borrowed word for a plasmoid who grew up among humans, or a full name and epithet for a Spelljammer captain.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide how your plasmoid speaks first: one who mostly gurgles suits a Glorbek or Squelchik, while one raised among other species might go by a borrowed word like Custard or Ballast.
- Repeated-syllable names (Glub-Glub, Plip-Plop) are memorable at the table and easy for other players to say, which matters for a race with no vocal cords.
- Add an earned epithet after the first few sessions, tied to a plasmoid ability such as squeezing through a crack or holding an object inside its body.
- Plasmoids can change color, so a name referencing hue (Amber-Hue, Sixteen-Colors) gives you a hook for describing mood without words.
- Nautical borrowed words (Bilge, Grommet, Cask) fit plasmoids who serve on spelljamming ships and make it obvious the character was named by sailors.
Frequently asked questions
How do plasmoids get their names in D&D?
Spelljammer: Adventures in Space says plasmoids lack vocal cords and communicate through vibration and gurgling, so their names are either approximations of the sounds they make or words borrowed from other creatures' languages. Many end up with a nickname given by crewmates.
Do plasmoids have surnames or family names?
Not by default. Plasmoid culture is loosely described and most named plasmoids in published material use a single name, sometimes with a descriptive epithet added by others.
Which sourcebook has the plasmoid race?
Plasmoids appear in Spelljammer: Adventures in Space (2022) in the Astral Adventurer's Guide, alongside astral elves, autognomes, giff, hadozee and thri-kreen. They were also previewed in the Unearthed Arcana: Travelers of the Multiverse playtest.
Can I use these names outside of D&D?
Yes. The names are original and free to use for any ooze or slime character in other RPGs, video games or fiction. Only the term plasmoid and the Spelljammer setting belong to Wizards of the Coast.
