Giff Name Generator

Giff are the hippopotamus-headed humanoids of Dungeons & Dragons, introduced in the Spelljammer setting and made a playable race in Spelljammer: Adventures in Space for 5e. They are big, disciplined and unfailingly polite mercenaries who love firearms, gunpowder, military drill and immaculate uniforms. Everything about the culture is regimented, and their names show it: rank comes first, always, and a giff will introduce themselves as Sergeant Ostrifang or Colonel Hardcastle long before they offer a first name.

Giff society is organized like an army even when there is no war, and titles are earned rather than inherited. Two naming styles sit side by side. Officers and old families tend toward stiff, aristocratic names with an Edwardian British ring, such as Bartholomew Thumb, Wilhelmina Bosk or Fitzwilliam Crane. Rank-and-file giff often carry short, blunt given names (Bruk, Kellek, Tobbin, Umbo) and descriptive surnames that reference their bulk or their trade: Widejaw, Ironhide, Blackpowder, Grapeshot Vane. Some are simply known by a rank and a nickname, like Old Bull Ferrers or Big Tobbin.

The list mixes all of these formats so you can assemble a giff who sounds like a decorated commander, a cheerful grunt or a retired artillery officer. Choose the rank to match the character's backstory, then let the surname carry the flavor.
