Generate a pantheon name for your fantasy setting: collective names in the style of the Aesir and the Ennead (The Vaelith, The Skarnir), numbered hosts like The Nine Lanterns and The Thirteen Masks, descriptive courts and synods, and epithets such as Those Who Walked Before. Built for worldbuilders, D&D Dungeon Masters and fantasy writers designing a religion from the top down.
About pantheon names
Real pantheons are rarely named by the gods themselves; they are named by the people who worship them, and the name tells you how that culture sees its divinities. The Aesir and Vanir are tribes, the Ennead and Ogdoad are simply counts (nine and eight), the Olympians are named for where they live, and the Tuatha Dé Danann are 'the people of the goddess Danu', a family line. Each pattern is reusable: invent a tribe word with a consistent phonology (The Skarnir, The Ilumani), count the gods (The Seven Silent, The Thirteen Masks), name the place (The Sky-Hall, The Far Table) or the founder (The House of Vaelor, Children of Ormuth).
The collective noun carries a lot of tone. A Court implies hierarchy and intrigue, a Synod or Parliament suggests gods who argue and vote, a Choir or Litany points to worship and song, a Host sounds martial, and Kindred or Household makes them a family with grudges. Epithets used by mortals who fear to name the gods directly (Those Who Walked Before, The Ones Beneath, The Unnamed Above) work well for older, darker, or forbidden pantheons.
Many settings have several: a state pantheon, a folk pantheon of small gods, and an outlawed one. Give each a different structure, and the names will do half your worldbuilding for you.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the pantheon name to the culture that worships it, not to the gods' domains: a seafaring people will say The Sea-Wed Gods or The Salt Gods, a city of clerks might say The Gods of the Ledger.
- If you invent a tribe name (The Vaelith, The Qorrath), reuse its sounds in the individual gods' names and in the priesthood's titles so the whole religion feels like one language.
- Pick a number only if it matters in play: The Nine Lanterns invites the question of which nine, and a missing or dead tenth god is an instant plot hook.
- Let rival cultures use different names for the same gods; what one kingdom calls The Radiant Conclave, its enemies can call The Gilded Throng.
- Use epithets (The Ones Beneath, Those Who Walked Before) for pantheons that are feared, forgotten or forbidden, and plain tribe or place names for the gods people pray to daily.
Frequently asked questions
What is a pantheon name?
A pantheon name is the collective name for a group of gods worshipped together, like the Olympians, the Aesir or the Ennead. In worldbuilding it is the label your cultures use for their gods as a whole, and it usually appears in prayers, oaths and histories before any individual deity is named.
How do I name a pantheon for D&D or a fantasy novel?
Start with how the worshippers think of their gods. If they are a family, use a tribe or lineage name (The Skarnir, The House of Vaelor); if they are a ruling body, use Court, Synod, Conclave or Parliament; if the culture counts them, use a number (The Seven Silent). Then make the individual god names share sounds with the pantheon name so it reads as one religion.
Should a pantheon have a fixed number of gods?
Only if you want that number to matter. Real pantheons shifted constantly; the Twelve Olympians were a later tidy-up and lists disagree on who was in. A numbered name like The Nine Lanterns or The Thirteen Masks is memorable and gives you built-in plot hooks (a lost god, an empty seat), but open-ended names like The Sundered Host let you add gods as the campaign needs them.
Can one world have several pantheons?
Yes, and it usually should. Give each culture or region its own pantheon name and collective noun, let them overlap and disagree about who the gods really are, and add a pantheon of small gods for hearths, crossroads and harvests. The contrast between The Radiant Conclave and The Gods Under the Hill tells players a great deal about who worships what.
