Dwarven God Name Generator
Gods of forge, stone, hearth and oath
Generate dwarven god and goddess names for a fantasy pantheon: original deities with domain titles like Dorgrum Anvilfather, Helka of the Banked Fire and Kuldr, Lord of the Deep Roads, epithets like The Gray Ancestor, plus published dwarf gods such as Moradin and Torag.
About dwarven god names
Dwarven gods are named the way dwarves are: a short, hard personal name, then a title that says what the god does. The published pantheons agree on the pattern. Moradin leads the dwarven gods of the Forgotten Realms beside Berronar Truesilver and Clangeddin Silverbeard, Pathfinder has Torag and his family, Warhammer's dwarfs honor the ancestor gods Grungni, Valaya and Grimnir, and Tolkien's dwarves call their maker Mahal. Thirty such names are in the list; all the others are original.
The list follows the work a dwarf hold depends on: smiths and crafters (Dorgrum Anvilfather, Thyrna, Lady of the Crucible), gods of stone, mines and gems (Kuldr, Lord of the Deep Roads), hearth, marriage and brewing deities (Helka of the Banked Fire, Gromm Alefather), war and oath gods (Modra of the Kept Oath), deified first kings, gods of tombs and memory, and a few grim or exiled gods of greed and grudges (Morruk the Long Grudge).
There are also bare names, gods of law, trade, runes, roads and weather, and epithet-only names such as The Gray Ancestor, for a god whose true name is not spoken. Goddesses make up a large share. None of the invented names is offered as a word of Khuzdul, Khazalid or any other published dwarven language.
How to choose dwarven god names
- Start with the hold, not the heavens. List what your dwarves fear and need (cave-ins, bad air, debt, siege, an empty cask) and give each one a god: Venn, Warner of Bad Air or Molg the Cave-In says more about a culture than a second forge god.
- Keep the personal name short and hard. One or two syllables with k, g, d, r and m sounds (Gromm, Kuldr, Hodra) read as dwarven; long, flowing names read as elven.
- Make the gods a family. Dwarven pantheons are clans: a smith and a hearth goddess as spouses, their children as patrons of single crafts, and one sibling who was cast out. Shared syllables in the names make the kinship easy to hear.
- Use the epithet-only form for the oldest god. The Maker of Makers or The Anvil That Rang First suits a creator whose name is kept for the temple, while clerics of younger gods say name and title together.
- If you play in a published setting, use its own gods first and add yours as clan ancestors, local patrons or forgotten aspects.
Frequently asked questions
Who are the dwarven gods in D&D?
In the Forgotten Realms the dwarven pantheon is led by Moradin, with Berronar Truesilver, Clangeddin Silverbeard, Dumathoin, Vergadain, Sharindlar, Haela Brightaxe, Marthammor Duin, Dugmaren Brightmantle, Gorm Gulthyn and Thard Harr. Abbathor is its god of greed, and Laduguer and Deep Duerra are the gods of the duergar. All of them are in the list, along with Reorx, the forge god revered by the dwarves of Dragonlance.
Which names in the list come from published settings?
Thirty. Besides the Forgotten Realms gods and Reorx, they are Torag, Folgrit, Bolka, Grundinnar, Kols, Magrim, Trudd, Angradd, Dranngvit and Droskar from Pathfinder, Grungni, Valaya, Grimnir and Gazul from Warhammer, and Mahal, the name Tolkien's dwarves give their maker. They belong to their publishers, and this site has no connection with any of them. Every other name is an original written for this page.
How do I name a dwarven goddess?
Use the same short, hard sounds as for a god and end the name in -a, -ra, -hild or -run: Helka, Modra, Thyrna, Vornhild, Hildrun. Give her real work, too. The list has goddesses of the crucible, the law-moot, the shield wall and the mine as well as of hearth and marriage, for example Eirna of the Shield-Sisters and Uldra, Lady of Veins.
Can I use these names in my own campaign or book?
The original names were written for readers to use in homebrew pantheons, for clerics and in stories. The published gods belong to their settings, so use those only when you play or write in those worlds.
