Generate gods with their domains attached, from Perun, God of Thunder to invented deities like Kordran, God of the War-Drum, so you can assemble a full pantheon in minutes. Draws on Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Slavic, Celtic, Yoruba, Maya, and Japanese mythology plus original names.
About gods names
A pantheon is more than a list of gods; it is a map of what a culture cared about. The Greeks needed a god of the sea, of wine, and of messengers because they sailed, farmed grapes, and traded. The Norse gave a goddess to skiing and archery (Skadi) because winter mattered. The Egyptians had a god of embalming and a goddess of the flood because the Nile and the afterlife organized their whole year. When you list gods with their domains side by side, the culture behind them appears.
This generator pairs each name with its domain for exactly that reason. The first half is authentic: Perun, God of Thunder; Ereshkigal, Queen of the Great Below; Ixchel, Goddess of the Moon and Medicine. The second half is original but built the same way, so Kordran, God of the War-Drum or Nerisse, Goddess of Salt and Sailors can slot into a homebrew world without sounding out of place next to the real thing.
A good fantasy pantheon usually has eight to fifteen major gods covering the things people pray about (weather, harvest, war, death, love, craft, luck, the sea) and a few odd, specific ones that make the world feel lived-in: a god of locks, a goddess of bees, a keeper of roads.
Tips for choosing a name
- Cover the essentials first (sky, sea, earth, death, war, love, harvest, craft), then add two or three oddly specific gods; those are what make a pantheon memorable.
- Give gods relationships: siblings, rivals, spouses, and a parent generation. Real pantheons are family dramas.
- Use domain pairs that reveal culture, like Shamash as god of both sun and justice, or Freyja as goddess of both love and battle.
- Decide whether your world has one pantheon or several competing ones; neighboring peoples in history often worshipped the same god under different names.
- Keep the domain phrasing consistent within a pantheon (God of X versus Lord of X versus Keeper of X) unless the difference is meaningful.
Frequently asked questions
How many gods should a fantasy pantheon have?
Most workable pantheons have between eight and fifteen major deities plus minor ones. The Greek Olympians number twelve, the Norse Aesir and Vanir have around fifteen frequently named gods, and D&D pantheons usually land in the same range.
Are these real gods or invented ones?
Both. About a hundred entries are authentic gods from Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Canaanite, Slavic, Celtic, Hindu, Japanese, Aztec, Maya, Yoruba, Polynesian, Persian, Finnish, Chinese, and Inca traditions; the rest are original names built to match those patterns.
What domains do gods usually have?
The near-universal ones are sky and thunder, sun, moon, sea, earth and harvest, death and the underworld, war, love and fertility, wisdom or writing, and craft. Trickster figures and gods of luck, roads, and hearth appear in most cultures too.
Can I use these gods and domains in a commercial game or novel?
Yes. Mythological gods are public domain, and the original names and domains here are free to use with no attribution required.
