Elven God Name Generator
Deities of starlight, forest, sea and song
Generate elven god and goddess names for your fantasy pantheon: original deities with Tolkien-style Quenya and Sindarin phonology, Seldarine-style two-part names and domain titles (Calaeris, Goddess of Dew and Dawn), plus the canon elven gods of Middle-earth, D&D, Warhammer, Dragon Age and The Elder Scrolls.
About elven god names
Elven gods sound different from human or dwarven ones because elven languages do. Tolkien set the template: Quenya names flow on open vowels and soft consonants (Manwë, Varda, Yavanna, Oromë), while Sindarin adds breathier th, dh and final -eth, -iel and -dir sounds (Elbereth, Gilthoniel). Later fantasy borrowed the same music. The D&D Seldarine use a personal name plus a surname-like second word (Corellon Larethian, Sehanine Moonbow, Labelas Enoreth), Warhammer's elven pantheon goes short and sharp (Asuryan, Isha, Khaine, Vaul), and Dragon Age's Evanuris use apostrophes to mark old compounds (Elgar'nan, Fen'Harel, Falon'Din).
A convincing elven deity name usually has three parts: a liquid, vowel-rich true name with l, r, n, th and long vowels (Ithilwë, Thalorien, Aelendir); a domain that fits elven concerns, meaning stars, moon, forests, the sea, song, craft, archery, memory and the passing into the West rather than war and gold; and an epithet that states it plainly (Nyvandriel, She Who Kindled the Stars; Kelvorien, God of the Deep Roots).
The list below mixes all three styles so you can take a bare name for a whispered prayer, a two-word Seldarine-style name for a D&D cleric's holy symbol, or a full name and title for a pantheon page in your worldbuilding notes.
How to choose elven god names
- Build the pantheon around elven values: a star-kindler, a moon-goddess, a forest lord, a sea-lady, a smith of gems, a keeper of song and a ferryman of the dead cover most of what elves care about. Each god's name should hint at its domain through its epithet, not just its sound.
- Keep the sounds liquid. Favour l, r, n, th, v and long vowels (Ilsandre, Vaelion, Thúriel) and avoid hard k, g and z clusters, which read as orcish or dwarven.
- Give the deity two names, a High Elven formal name and a shorter everyday one (Anorindë, called Anor), the way Tolkien gives Varda the Sindarin name Elbereth. It makes the religion feel old and layered.
- For D&D, the Seldarine pattern of personal name plus surname-like word (Solonor Thelandira, Aerdrie Faenya) fits best; for original novels, a single name with a title reads more mythic.
- Avoid lifting a famous elven character's name (Legolas, Galadriel, Drizzt) and adding a suffix to make it divine; readers spot the borrowing instantly. Invent fresh roots instead.
Frequently asked questions
Who are the elven gods in Tolkien's world?
Tolkien's elves revere the Valar, the angelic powers of Arda: Manwë and Varda (Elbereth), Ulmo, Aulë and Yavanna, Oromë, Mandos, Nienna, Lórien, Estë, Vairë, Tulkas, Nessa and Vána, with Eru Ilúvatar as the creator above them all. Elves do not worship gods of their own race; they honour the Valar, especially Varda as Elbereth Gilthoniel.
What are the elven gods in D&D?
The elven pantheon in Dungeons & Dragons is the Seldarine, led by Corellon Larethian. Its best-known members are Sehanine Moonbow (moon and dreams), Aerdrie Faenya (sky), Hanali Celanil (love and beauty), Labelas Enoreth (time), Solonor Thelandira (archery), Rillifane Rallathil (wood elves), Erevan Ilesere (mischief) and Deep Sashelas (sea elves). Lolth was cast out of the Seldarine and is worshipped by the drow.
How do I make an elven god name sound authentic?
Use open, flowing syllables with l, r, n, th and long vowels, end in -ë, -iel, -wen, -dir, -ion or -eth, and pair the name with a specific domain and epithet: Calaeris, Goddess of Dew and Dawn, or Tollirien, Shepherd of the Departed. Two or three syllables for the name keeps it easy to say in play.
Can I use these elven god names in my own book or game?
The original names here are free to use in novels, homebrew campaigns and published indie games. Canon names such as Corellon Larethian, Elune, Asuryan or Fen'Harel belong to their respective settings, so use them only if you are playing in those worlds.
