Generate pagan names for a craft or magical name, a heathen or Celtic reconstructionist persona, or a character in fiction: deity names from Celtic, Norse, Slavic, Baltic, Finnish, Greek and Egyptian traditions, Anglo-Saxon and Norse personal names, plant and animal craft names, and two-part names like Rowan Ashmoor.
About pagan names
Modern pagans take names from three main wells. The first is the old gods themselves: Brigid, Cernunnos, Freyja, Perun, Mielikki, Hecate, Bastet. Using a deity's name directly is common in Wicca and eclectic paths, while reconstructionist heathens and Celtic polytheists usually prefer a human name from the culture they follow, on the grounds that you honor a god rather than borrow their name. The second well is the pre-Christian personal names of northern Europe: Aelfwynn and Wulfstan from Anglo-Saxon England, Gunnhild and Thorfinn from the Norse world, Aoife and Lorcan from Ireland, Angharad and Bleddyn from Wales, Dobrava and Yaroslav from the Slavic lands.
The third well is the craft name, a nature word or two-part name taken at initiation or dedication and often used only in circle: Rowan, Vervain, Moonhare, Stormcrow, Tamsin Hollowell. Traditional craft names pair a tree, herb, stone, bird or animal with a place or weather word, and the best ones feel personal rather than grand. Titles like Lady or Lord were once attached to craft names in Gardnerian and Alexandrian lines, but most solitary practitioners now leave them off.
This generator mixes all three, whether you need a goddess name for a dedication, a Viking-age name for a blot, or a quiet plant name for a book of shadows.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the name to the tradition you actually follow: a Norse heathen name like Thorgerd Hallvardsdottir will feel out of place in a Hellenic devotional practice, and vice versa.
- If you take a deity's name, research that god first. Brigid, Morrigan and Hecate carry very different associations, and some practitioners consider using a god's name as your own presumptuous.
- For a craft name, pick a plant, tree, stone or animal you have a real connection to rather than the most dramatic-sounding one; Yarrow or Wren ages better than anything with Shadow in it.
- Say the name aloud in the contexts you will use it: a dedication, a forum signature, an introduction at a moot. Two-part names like Bryony Ashgrove read well but can be long to introduce in person.
- Check that a name from a living language means what you think it does; many Irish, Welsh and Old Norse names have meanings you may want to honor or avoid.
Frequently asked questions
What is a pagan craft name or magical name?
A craft name is a name chosen or given at initiation or dedication that a pagan uses in ritual, in a coven or online, separate from their legal name. It often draws on nature (Rowan, Vervain, Moonhare), a deity, or an ancestral culture, and some practitioners keep it private to their circle.
Is it okay to use a god's name as my pagan name?
It depends on your path. Many Wiccans and eclectic pagans do, especially for goddess names like Brigid or Selene. Heathens and reconstructionists usually avoid it and choose a human name from the culture instead, such as Gunnhild, Aelfwynn or Aoife. This generator includes both so you can choose what fits.
Which cultures do these pagan names come from?
Celtic (Irish, Welsh and Gaulish), Norse and Anglo-Saxon, Slavic, Baltic, Finnish, Greek and Roman, Egyptian and Mesopotamian, plus English nature and folk names. The list mixes deity names, historical personal names and invented craft names.
How do I choose between a Celtic, Norse or Wiccan-style name?
Start from the deities or ancestors you work with. If your practice centres on Freyja and Thor, a Norse name fits; if it is Brigid and the Dagda, choose Irish; if you are eclectic Wiccan, a nature craft name like Hazel Moonhare or a classical name like Selene works across traditions.
