Celtic Name Generator

"Celtic" covers two living branches and one that survives only in inscriptions. The Goidelic branch gives us Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Manx, with names like Aoife, Tadhg, Eilidh and Ruairidh and surnames built on Ó, Mac and Nic. The Brittonic branch gives us Welsh, Cornish and Breton, with Rhiannon, Gwilym, Kerensa, Jago, Nolwenn and Erwan and patronymics in ap and ferch. The oldest layer is Continental and British Celtic: chieftains recorded by Rome such as Vercingetorix, Boudica, Cassivellaunus and Cartimandua, whose names are compounds of words for king (rix), battle (catu), hound (cuno) and strength (nerto).

This list draws on all three. You will find ancient leaders and gods, heroes of the Ulster Cycle and the Mabinogion, medieval kings and poets, and modern full names in each language, including the Gaelic spellings of Scottish surnames and the feminine Ní and Nic forms that many generators forget. For fantasy use, the ancient and legendary names give the strongest flavour: they sound old because they are, and a character called Brannos or Arianrhod reads as unmistakably Celtic without borrowing a real modern surname.
