A spiritual name is a name taken or given to mark a new stage of inner life. In the Hindu and yogic traditions a guru bestows one at initiation, often a Sanskrit word for a divine quality (Shanti, peace; Karuna, compassion) or a compound ending in -ananda, bliss, as in Yogananda or Satchidananda. Kundalini yoga students receive two-word names such as Sat Kirin or Guru Prem, usually followed by Kaur or Singh. Buddhists get a dharma name at refuge or ordination: Tibetan names like Tenzin, Pema, and Yeshe, Pali names like Sumedho and Metta, or Japanese Zen names like Shunryu and Ekai. Sufi, Sikh, Jewish, and Christian traditions have parallel customs, giving names like Nur, Gurpreet, Neshama, and Theodora.

What these names share is that they describe a quality to grow into rather than a family history. That is why the best spiritual names carry a single, clear meaning you can say in a breath. When choosing, notice which meaning makes you slightly uncomfortable: a name that names your growing edge (Dhairya, patience; Vairagya, dispassion; Sabr, patience) tends to be more useful over years than one that flatters.

How do people traditionally get a spiritual name?

What do the -ananda names mean?
