Old West Town Name Generator

Real Old West towns were named quickly, often by whoever got there first, which is why the map of the 1870s frontier reads like a list of features, luck, and grievances. Mining camps took their names from what miners found or hoped to find (Goldfield, Silverton, Leadville, Tin Cup) or from the shape of the land (Cripple Creek, Rattlesnake Gulch). Cattle towns and railroad stops were named for the trail boss, the railroad official, or the nearest water (Abilene, Ogallala, Sweetwater). Army forts became towns that kept the fort's name (Fort Griffin, Fort Sumner), and Spanish and Mexican settlements kept theirs (Las Cruces, Agua Fria, San Miguel).

The most memorable Old West names carry a mood. Tombstone was a joke: a prospector was told all he would find was his tombstone. Deadwood was named for the dead trees in the gulch. Contention City, Purgatory, Last Chance, and Hell's Half Acre tell you exactly what life there was like. A good fictional western town works the same way: a plain geographic word (Creek, Gulch, Wells, Bluff, Crossing, Junction, Flats) plus one specific detail that hints at a story.

Use single-word names for towns that were meant to sound respectable and two-word feature names for camps that never expected to last. Both belong on the same map.
