Old West Name Generator

Names on the American frontier between the 1860s and 1890s followed the naming fashions of the eastern states the settlers came from, so a real Old West character is more likely to be a Silas, Ezra, Amos, Josiah or Cornelius than a Colt or Maverick. Biblical and classical names ran deep (Jedediah, Obadiah, Ulysses, Cassius), while women were Adelaide, Hattie, Della, Mattie, Clementine and Lavinia. Surnames were largely English, Scots-Irish and German: Whitlock, Sutter, Prewitt, Kessler, Slocum, Kimble.

What gives the era its flavor is the nickname. Frontier towns were full of transients who went by a first name plus a descriptor, and the patterns are consistent: a home state (Texas Jack, Arkansas Tom, Kansas Charlie), a physical trait (Curly Bill, Big Nose George, Three-Fingered Jack, Shorty), a profession or claim to fame (Doc, Bat, Cattle Kate, Poker Alice), a place (Deadwood Dick, Bitter Creek Newcomb, Rose of Cimarron), or 'Kid' for anyone young and dangerous (Billy the Kid, the Sundance Kid). Women who ran saloons or rode with gangs got the same treatment: Calamity Jane, Big Nose Kate, Madam Mustache.

The list mixes real historical figures (Bass Reeves, Elfego Baca, Stagecoach Mary Fields) with invented but period-correct names, so you can grab a lawman, an outlaw, a schoolteacher or a saloon owner and know it would pass in 1878 Dodge City.
