Old Western Name Generator

Western character names come in two traditions. The first is historical: the actual gunfighters, lawmen and outlaws of the 1870s and 80s, whose names (Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Belle Starr, Bass Reeves) were ordinary Victorian names made famous by newspapers and dime novels. The second is Hollywood and pulp fiction, which built a stylized western name out of short, hard first names (Cade, Wade, Cole, Boone, Jubal, Rafe) and surnames that sound like landscape or weather: Stark, Creed, Marsh, Thorne, Ridley, Bledsoe. Classic films added a third pattern, the one-word name: Shane, Hondo, Paladin, Blondie, Harmonica.

The best western names signal role at a glance. Lawmen carry a title (Marshal Cade Bishop, Sheriff Amos Kane), doctors are 'Doc', ranch owners get weighty two-syllable surnames (Cartwright, Whitfield), and drifters get a state or trait attached: Montana Slim, Nevada Smith, One-Eyed Jack. Women in westerns range from period-accurate given names like Mattie, Della, Clementine and Lorena to saloon-hall handles like Poker Alice and Diamond Lil.
