Ranch Name Generator

Real ranches are usually named one of three ways. The oldest tradition is the brand: cattle brands were registered symbols read left to right and top to bottom, so a ranch became the Rocking R, the Bar S, the Lazy J (a letter lying on its side), the Flying W (a letter with wings), the Rafter K (a letter under a peaked line), or the Quarter Circle U. Famous Texas outfits like the Four Sixes (6666), the Pitchfork, and the Matador are named for their brands, and the name on the gate matches the mark on the hide.

The second tradition is landmarks and water: Cottonwood Creek, Sweetwater, Twin Buttes, Sage Flat, Arroyo Seco. Ranches were staked around springs and creeks, so a water name is often literal history. The third is the family name, sometimes with a formal business tail (Whitaker Ranch, Sheridan Land & Cattle, McAllister Cattle Company) and sometimes just "the Hollister place," which is how neighbours actually talk. In the Southwest and California, many ranches keep Spanish land-grant names: Rancho Escondido, Rancho San Miguel, Hacienda del Sol.

A good ranch name is short, easy to paint on a gate, and points to something real: a mark, a creek, a family, a horse. It should sound the same whether it is on a saddle blanket, a feed invoice, or the first page of a western.
