About sea names

Real seas are named in a small number of ways, and once you know them fictional seas become easy to make convincing. Colours are the oldest: the Red, Black, Yellow and White Seas. Directions and position come next: the North Sea, the Inland Sea, the Mediterranean, which literally means 'in the middle of land'. Many take the name of a neighbouring people or place, either directly (the Sea of Japan, the Irish Sea) or with an adjective ending (the Adriatic, the Aegean, the Tyrrhenian). A few are named for what they contain or how they behave: the Sargasso Sea for its seaweed, the Sea of Marmara for its marble quarries, the Dead Sea for its lifelessness. Straits, gulfs, sounds and bays follow the same logic but often add a saint, an explorer or a nearby port.

The list here applies all of those patterns to invented geography. Some entries use a made-up region name with a real-sounding adjective form (the Ythran Sea, the Aldyssian Sea); some are colour or temperament seas (the Slate Sea, the Restless Sea); others use the 'Sea of' construction with a legend, a saint or a memorable feature (the Sea of Sunken Towers, the Sea of Saint Maren). Smaller bodies of water get gulf, strait, sound, reach, shoal and mere names so a map has variety at every scale.

Pick one style per region and the names will feel like they were coined by the people who sail them rather than by an author.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Use the largest, plainest names for the biggest water: the Outer Sea or the Boundless Sea reads as an ocean, while the Bay of Sighs is clearly local.
  • Name at least one sea after a neighbouring people or kingdom (the Vellish Sea, the Sea of Corvane) so the geography feels politically connected.
  • Vary the type word by scale: Sea and Deep for large expanses, Gulf and Sound for coastal water, Strait and Narrows for choke points, Shoals for hazards.
  • Sailors name water after what it does to them; give dangerous crossings names like the Widowmaker Shoals or the Strait of Teeth and calm ones names like the Still Sea.
  • Let cultures disagree: the same water can be the Ythran Sea on one kingdom's map and the Sea of the Drowned King on another's.

How do real seas get their names?

Mostly from colours (Red Sea, Black Sea), position (North Sea, Mediterranean), nearby peoples or places (Adriatic, Sea of Japan), or a defining feature (Sargasso Sea, Dead Sea). Straits and gulfs are often named for saints, explorers or ports.

What's the difference between a sea, a gulf, a strait and a sound?

A sea is a large body of salt water partly enclosed by land; a gulf is a large inlet of a sea; a strait is a narrow channel connecting two bodies of water; a sound is a wide inlet or a channel between an island and the mainland.

Should a fantasy sea name include 'The'?
