Generate pirate ship names modelled on the real Golden Age fleet (Queen Anne's Revenge, Whydah Gally, Royal Fortune, Fancy) plus fearsome, ironic and legendary vessels for novels, D&D campaigns and Sea of Thieves crews.

About pirate ship names

Real pirate ships were mostly captured merchantmen or naval vessels renamed on the spot, so their names say a lot about the captain. Blackbeard took the slaver La Concorde and christened her Queen Anne's Revenge, a political jab. Bartholomew Roberts named ship after ship Royal Fortune. Sam Bellamy kept the Whydah Gally's original name; Henry Every sailed the Fancy, William Kidd the Adventure Galley, Stede Bonnet the Revenge, Charles Vane the Ranger, Calico Jack the William. Fictional pirates gave us the Black Pearl, the Hispaniola, the Jolly Roger and the Walrus.

The patterns fall into a few families. Revenge and defiance names (Revenge, Vengeance, Defiance, Retribution). Fortune and greed (Royal Fortune, Good Fortune, Golden Hind, Prosperous). Predators and sea monsters (Kraken, Sea Serpent, Black Shark, Barracuda). Women's names, often a lover or the mother of a captain (Mary Anne, Rebecca, Bonny Kate). And plain merchant names that were never changed after capture (William, Ranger, Delivery, Speedwell). Later fiction added menace and blood: Crimson Tide, Widow's Wrath, Cutthroat.

A convincing pirate ship name is short, sayable by a drunk crew and appropriate to the ship's origin. Small sloops carried plain or cheeky names; captured frigates got grand ones. Choose whether your captain is a romantic, a brute or a businessman, and let the ship's name betray it.

How to choose pirate ship names

  • Decide the ship's backstory first: a captured naval frigate keeps a stately name, a stolen sloop gets a cheeky or vengeful one, and a legendary galleon earns a title.
  • Real pirate ships were rarely called 'The Bloody Skull'. Mix menace with ordinary-sounding names (Ranger, William, Delivery) for authenticity.
  • Revenge, Fortune, and women's names are the three most historically accurate families; use one for a captain readers should believe in.
  • In games like Sea of Thieves or D&D, choose a name your crew can shout in two syllables: 'the Fancy', 'the Pearl', 'the Wyvern'.
  • Ship names are traditionally referred to as 'she'; write dialogue that way and the name will feel like a character.

Frequently asked questions

What were the most famous real pirate ships?

Queen Anne's Revenge (Blackbeard), Whydah Gally (Sam Bellamy), Royal Fortune (Bartholomew Roberts), Fancy (Henry Every), Adventure Galley (William Kidd), Revenge (Stede Bonnet) and Ranger (Charles Vane) are the best documented, all from the Golden Age of piracy, roughly 1690 to 1730.

How did pirates name their ships?

Most pirate ships were captured vessels, and captains either kept the original name or renamed them to make a statement: revenge on an enemy, a boast about fortune, or a tribute to a lover or monarch. Names were short and often reused across a captain's career.

Should a pirate ship name start with 'The'?

In speech, yes: 'the Revenge', 'the Black Pearl'. On the ship's stern and in official records the article is usually dropped, so write Queen Anne's Revenge, not The Queen Anne's Revenge, unless the article is genuinely part of the name.

Can I use these names in my game or book?

Yes, they are free to use commercially. Names of real historic ships are public domain; the Black Pearl and Flying Dutchman are famous enough to be recognised, so avoid them for an original ship you want readers to remember as yours.
