Generate lake names that sound like they belong on a real map: glacial tarns, mountain lakes, lochs, meres and reservoirs, plus fantasy lakes for D&D worlds and novels. Names follow real conventions, from Loch Ardven and Lake Winnisquam to the Mere of Sighing Reeds.

About lake names

Real lake names fall into a few families, and once you know them your invented lakes stop sounding like perfume brands. The largest group is indigenous or ancestral: Winnipesaukee, Memphremagog, Okanagan and Titicaca are Abenaki, Salish and Quechua words, and their long, rhythmic syllables are what make a North American map feel authentic. Next are description names, plain and honest: Long Lake, Round Lake, Clearwater, Coldwater, Horseshoe Lake, Torch Lake. Then wildlife and trees: Loon Lake, Trout Lake, Birch Lake, Tamarack Lake. Finally, people and events: Lake Louise, Jenny Lake, Convict Lake, Donner Lake and Devils Lake all preserve a story.

The generic word itself carries flavor. Loch is Scottish, lough Irish, llyn Welsh, and the Lake District uses mere, water and tarn (Windermere, Ullswater, Blea Tarn) with the word 'lake' almost never attached. Germanic lands use -see (Königssee, Achensee), Scandinavia -vatn and -sjön, Japan -ko (Kawaguchiko), Tibet tso (Pangong Tso). Fantasy maps borrow these to signal culture: a Loch Caerwyn is Celtic hill country, Ashenmere is bleak old-English moorland, and 'the Mere of Sighing Reeds' is a place with a legend attached.

This list combines famous real lakes from every continent with invented names in each of those families, plus mythic and D&D-ready titles for lakes that hide something.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick the generic word to match the culture of your map: loch, lough, llyn, mere, tarn, water, -see, tso or plain 'Lake', and stay consistent across a region.
  • Small lakes take one-word descriptors (Round Lake, Bog Lake, Otter Lake); big lakes get an old, multi-syllable name (Memphremagog, Wakatipu) or a person's name.
  • Give a fantasy lake a legend by naming what happened there: the Lake of the Drowned Bell or Ferryman's Water suggests a story before you write it.
  • For a cabin or lake house sign, choose something soft and two-syllable such as Halcyon, Solace, Elowen or Longwater rather than a grand mythic name.
  • A single lake often has an upper and lower body or a 'Little' twin (Upper Saranac, Little Winnisquam); adding one instantly makes a map feel surveyed rather than invented.

Frequently asked questions

How are lakes usually named?

Most real lakes take an indigenous word, a plain description (Long, Clear, Round, Cold), a plant or animal, or a person or event connected to the shore. Whether 'Lake' comes first (Lake Tahoe) or last (Crater Lake) mostly follows regional habit.

What is the difference between a lake, a mere, a tarn and a loch?

They are the same kind of feature named in different dialects. Mere is Old English for a broad shallow lake, tarn is Norse for a small mountain lake, loch is Scottish Gaelic and lough its Irish form. Using them correctly locates a fantasy region culturally.

Are these real lake names?

Many are real, from Loch Ness and Lake Baikal to small Adirondack and Cascade lakes. Others, such as Loch Ardven, Lake Serevar and the Mere of Sighing Reeds, are invented to follow the same conventions for fantasy and fiction use.

Can I use one of these names for my own lake, pond or property?

Yes. Place names are not protected by copyright, so any name here can go on a private lake, a cabin sign, a map or a novel. Officially renaming a public lake requires your national or state geographic names board.
