River Name Generator

This list is made of real rivers, which makes it different from most river name generators. Real hydronyms carry thousands of years of language history: the Thames and the Tamar share a Celtic root meaning "dark", the Mississippi is Ojibwe for "great river", the Rio Grande is simply Spanish for "big river", and Amu Darya and Syr Darya use the Persian word for river. Fantasy authors also study the sound of real rivers before inventing their own, because a made-up river that follows the same phonetic rules as the Rhône or the Waikato reads as authentic.
