Generate names for the monsters of Norse myth and Scandinavian folklore: attested beasts like Fenrir and Hafgufa, folklore beings like Nøkken and Jólakötturinn, the Yule Cat, and new coinages such as Myrkúlfr, the Murk-Wolf, Rime-Jaw and The Fjord-Choker.

About Norse monster names

The monsters of the North come from two layers of tradition. The older is the mythology of the Eddas and sagas: the wolf Fenrir, the hound Garmr, the world-circling serpent Jörmungandr, the root-gnawing Níðhöggr, and sea beasts such as Hafgufa and Lyngbakr, the size of islands. The younger is later Scandinavian and Icelandic folklore: the nøkk and the fossegrim in rivers and waterfalls, the plague hag Pesta, and Iceland's Yule Lads and the Yule Cat.

This list of 1,000 names keeps three kinds of entry apart. Names marked (attested) are found in medieval Norse sources and use standard Old Norse spelling. Names marked with a country and the word folklore, such as Nøkken (Norwegian folklore: the water spirit), belong to later folk tradition, not to the Eddas. Everything without a label is a modern coinage: a plain English kenning like Rime-Jaw, Moon-Hound or The Fjord-Choker, or a new compound of real Old Norse words with its meaning attached, as in Myrkúlfr, the Murk-Wolf, and Brimormr, the Surf-Serpent.

The coinages cover wolves and hounds, sea beasts, trolls and troll-wives, water-horses, night-riders, carrion birds, Icelandic-style folk beasts and beasts of Nordic-style places such as The Beast of Hrafnsvik. Treat them as fiction, not scholarship: if one matches an old word or a real place name, that is coincidence.

How to choose Norse monster names

  • Check the label before you cite a name. Only entries marked (attested) or marked as folklore come from tradition. A name such as Hrímgarmr, the Rime-Hound is new, however old it sounds.
  • Drop the gloss when you want the bare name. Myrkúlfr fits a map or a stat block, and the English half, the Murk-Wolf, is what frightened villagers would call it.
  • Match the monster to the landscape: sea beasts and skerry trolls for coasts, water-horses and fiddlers for tarns and waterfalls, scree-cats and glacier trolls for the high fells.
  • Kennings name a creature by what it does. Pair a target with an action to make your own, on the pattern of Fetter-Breaker, Herd-Thinner or Byre-Breaker.
  • Let one beast collect several names: a place legend like The Ulvdal Howler for rumors, a kenning for the skalds, and an Old Norse compound for the name it answers to.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best-known monsters in Norse mythology?

The wolf Fenrir, the Midgard Serpent Jörmungandr and the serpent Níðhöggr, which gnaws at the roots of Yggdrasil, are the most famous. The Eddas also name the hound Garmr, the wolves Sköll and Hati, which chase the sun and the moon, and the eagle-shaped giant Hræsvelgr, whose wings make the wind. All of them are in this list with the label (attested).

Which names here are from tradition and which are made up?

Entries marked (attested) come from the Eddas, sagas and other medieval Norse texts. Entries marked with a country and the word folklore, like Jólakötturinn (Icelandic folklore: the Yule Cat), come from later folk tradition. Every other name, including Náhrafn, the Corpse-Raven and Old Mother Scree, is a modern coinage, and coinages make up most of the list.

Is the Yule Cat part of Norse mythology?

No. The Yule Cat and the Yule Lads belong to Icelandic folklore written down long after the Viking Age, and the fossegrim, the brook horse and the church grim are likewise beings of later Scandinavian folk belief. They carry a folklore label here so that nobody mistakes them for creatures of the Eddas.

How are the Old Norse compounds built?

Each joins two real Old Norse words, such as úlfr (wolf), ormr (serpent), hrím (rime), myrkr (dark), nár (corpse) and brim (surf), and gives the meaning in English after the comma: Hrímgarmr, the Rime-Hound, or Brimormr, the Surf-Serpent. They follow the pattern of attested names like Mánagarmr, but they were made for this list and were not taken from old texts.
