Generate Norse world names modeled on the Nine Realms of Yggdrasil: -heim, -gard, -vangr and -vellir compounds built from Old Norse words for fire, frost, gods, giants and beasts, alongside the canon realms, halls and rivers of the Eddas. Built for fantasy worldbuilding, God of War and Valheim-style games, and D&D campaigns.
About norse world names
The Nine Worlds of Norse myth follow a naming grammar you can reuse endlessly. Almost every realm is a compound: a defining word plus a word for home, enclosure or field. Heimr means home or world (Jotunheim, Niflheim, Muspelheim, Vanaheim), gardr is an enclosed yard or stronghold (Asgard, Midgard, Utgard), vangr and vellir are plains and fields (Folkvangr, Nidavellir, Idavoll). The front half names who or what lives there: jotnar (giants), nifl (mist), Muspell (fire), alfar (elves), dvergar (dwarves), or the Aesir themselves.
This generator keeps that structure and widens the vocabulary. Alongside the canon realms you will find the halls of the gods (Valaskjalf, Bilskirnir, Sessrumnir, Fensalir), the rivers that flow from Hvergelmir (Gjoll, Slidr, Vimur), and original worlds built from Old Norse roots for fire, rime, shadow, stars, wolves, ravens and serpents. Many use genitive forms the way real Icelandic place names do, so Ulfsheimr and Hrafnsgardr read as "Wolf's Home" and "Raven's Enclosure" rather than as stuck-together syllables. Historical Viking-age names like Gardariki, Miklagardr and Vinland are included because they show the same grammar applied to real places.
A final group anglicizes the pattern (Ravensgarth, Frostwold, Ironfell) for settings that want the Norse feel without the Old Norse spelling.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the ending to the kind of place: -heimr for a whole world or race homeland, -gardr for a walled stronghold-realm, -vangr or -vellir for open plains, -holl or -salir for a single great hall, -ey or -holmr for islands.
- Use the genitive for possession. Ulfsheimr (wolf's) and Jotnagard (giants') sound more authentic than Ulfheim or Jotunheim-style stems glued together, and Icelandic maps are full of the former.
- Pair opposites for a cosmology. Norse myth balances fire against ice and light against dark, so give your setting a Muspelheim-like Eldheim and a Niflheim-like Hrimholl rather than nine variations on the same mood.
- Drop the Old Norse nominative -r (Asgardr becomes Asgard, Midgardr becomes Midgard) for readability in English prose, but keep it in glossaries or on maps if you want the scholarly look.
- Check canon before claiming a name. Glitnir, Breidablik, Himinbjorg and Thrudheim are all specific halls in the Eddas, so use them knowingly or pick an original compound.
Frequently asked questions
What are the Nine Worlds in Norse mythology?
The usual list is Asgard (the Aesir), Vanaheim (the Vanir), Alfheim (light elves), Midgard (humans), Jotunheim (giants), Svartalfheim or Nidavellir (dwarves), Niflheim (mist and ice), Muspelheim (fire) and Helheim (the dead). The sources never give a fixed list, which is why some versions swap Nidavellir and Svartalfheim or treat Hel as part of Niflheim.
What do the endings -heim, -gard and -vangr mean?
Heimr means home or world, gardr means an enclosure, yard or stronghold, and vangr means a field or plain (vellir is the plural of vollr, also a field). Other common place words are holl (hall), salir (halls), bjorg (crags), vidr (wood), ey (island) and brunnr (well).
Can I use these names for God of War, Valheim or Assassin's Creed Valhalla characters and worlds?
Yes. Those games draw on the same Eddic vocabulary, so the names fit naturally as custom realm names, server names, world seeds or locations in fan fiction. Canon names like Asgard and Niflheim are public-domain mythology, not game trademarks.
How is this different from a Norse country name generator?
Country names describe kingdoms and regions that humans might rule (Halogaland, Rogaland). World names describe whole cosmological realms and mythic places: homes of gods, giants and the dead, the halls of individual deities, and the rivers and wells of Yggdrasil. There is overlap, but the register here is mythic rather than political.
