Nord Last Name Generator

Nords in the Elder Scrolls rarely carry a surname the way an Imperial does. Most of the famous ones are clan names made of two plain, hard-edged words joined by a hyphen: Battle-Born, Gray-Mane, Shatter-Shield, Silver-Blood, Cruel-Sea, Snow-Shod, Free-Winter. The formula is an adjective or noun plus a body part, weapon, or piece of the landscape, and it works because the words are short, Germanic, and say something about the family's history or trade. Older houses and great heroes tend to fuse the two halves into one word instead – Stormcloak, Whitemane, Windcaller, Ravencrone, Firebeard.

The other Nord tradition is the earned epithet. Balgruuf the Greater, Uthgerd the Unbroken, Mjoll the Lioness, Olaf One-Eye and Hakon One-Eye all use a deed or a feature as a second name, and a character can pick one up mid-campaign after something memorable happens. Atmoran-style patronymics (Ulfsson, Thorsdottir) show up in histories and sagas and fit an old-blood or Skaal character.

This generator mixes all four styles. For a believable Skyrim Nord, pair a short given name with one of these – Gerdur Ice-Veins, Ralof Snow-Hammer – and make the surname hint at where the family comes from: sea words for Solitude and Dawnstar, mining and stone words for the Reach and the Rift, mead and harvest words for Whiterun's farmers.
