Generate lore-friendly Redguard names for Skyrim, Elder Scrolls Online and tabletop Tamriel campaigns, drawing on the Arabic, Persian and North African sounds that define Hammerfell, complete with at-, af- and al- style surnames.

About redguard names

Redguards are the people of Hammerfell, descended from the Ra Gada who sailed east from the lost continent of Yokuda. Bethesda gives them a distinctly Arabic, Persian and North African sound: short vowel-heavy first names such as Nazir, Saadia, Kematu, Rayya, Iszara and Cyrus, with hard consonants and a lot of names ending in -a, -ah, -im or -ir. Alik'r Desert warriors, Sword-Singers and Ansei from the old Yokudan sagas (Frandar Hunding, Makela Leki, Derik Hallin) add a more heroic register.

Surnames are optional. In Skyrim most Redguards go by a single name, but Elder Scrolls Online and the older lore books use a place-of-origin form built with a prefix: at- (Aisha at-Tura), af- (Talib af-Sadal) or al- (Rahdi al-Skaven), where the second element is a Hammerfell city or region such as Sentinel, Taneth, Rihad, Elinhir, Hegathe or Gilane. Forebears and Crowns, the two political factions, both use this pattern, so it works for any character background.

When picking a name, favour something a desert-born mercenary or Sentinel merchant could plausibly carry. Two syllables for a fighter, three for a mage or noble, and a regional surname if you plan to roleplay in ESO or on a Skyrim RP server. Avoid Nordic or Imperial-sounding endings like -ulf or -ius; they will read as another race entirely.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Use a single name (Kematu, Saffir) for a Skyrim playthrough and add an at-/af-/al- surname when you want an ESO or RP character with a home city.
  • Match the surname city to your backstory: Sentinel for Forebear merchants and sailors, Rihad and Taneth for the southern coast, Elinhir and Dragonstar for the Craglorn border.
  • Sword-Singer and Ansei style epithets (Nine-Blades, Duneborn, the Sandwalker) work well for warrior or Alik'r characters, but keep them out of stealthy or scholarly builds.
  • Check that the name is not already a major NPC (Nazir, Isran, Sai Sahan) if you play on RP servers that discourage lore-character names.
  • Redguard names sound best without doubled letters or apostrophes; leave those to Khajiit and Dunmer.

Frequently asked questions

What real-world cultures inspire Redguard names?

Redguard names draw mostly on Arabic and Persian naming, with some North and West African influence. Their homeland Hammerfell and its Alik'r Desert are modelled on those regions, so names like Nazir, Rashid, Zahra and Farid all fit.

Do Redguards have surnames in Elder Scrolls?

Sometimes. In Skyrim most Redguards use one name, but ESO and lore books show a place-based surname with a prefix, such as Talib af-Sadal or Aisha at-Tura, where the second part is a Hammerfell city or region.

Can I use these names for Skyrim, ESO or a D&D game?

Yes. All of the names are lore-friendly for any Elder Scrolls title, and because they lean on real Arabic and Persian sounds they also work for desert-themed characters in Dungeons & Dragons or original fiction.

What is the difference between Crown and Forebear names?

Lore does not prescribe separate name lists, but Crowns (traditionalists) tend to be written with older Yokudan flavour and heroic epithets, while Forebears (Tamriel-integrated) use plainer names and often adopt city-based surnames.
