Generate lore-accurate Skyrim last names: Nord clan epithets like Battle-Born and Snow-Shod, one-word names like Whitemane and Stormcloak, 'the Unbroken'-style bynames, plus Imperial, Breton, Dunmer, Orc and Redguard surnames for any character in Skyrim or ESO.

About skyrim last names

Most Nords in Skyrim do not have a family name at all; they have an epithet, and the ones that stick become clan names. The hyphenated form is the classic: Battle-Born, Gray-Mane, Silver-Blood, Black-Briar, Shatter-Shield and Snow-Shod are the great houses of Whiterun, Markarth, Riften and Windhelm, while personal bynames like Once-Honored, Horse-Crusher, Six-Fingers, Knot-Beard and Thrice-Pierced describe one person's deeds, body or reputation. A second form fuses the two halves into one word (Whitemane, Stormcloak, Firebeard, Bearclaw, Ironhand), and a third is the 'the' byname: Mjoll the Lioness, Uthgerd the Unbroken, Olava the Feeble, Skald the Elder. Patronymics such as Gauldurson appear only in old tombs and sagas.

Other races bring their own conventions. Imperials carry Latin-sounding family names (Avenicci, Valerius, Vinius, Tituleius), Bretons use French-flavoured ones (Lylvieve, Dufont, Beaufort, Motierre), Dunmer take Great House or family names (Sadri, Atheron, Hlaalu, Rendar, Severin), Orcs are named gro- or gra- after their stronghold father (gro-Bagol, gra-Dushnikh), and Redguards in lore use at-, al- or af- plus a home city. Altmer, Bosmer, Khajiit and Argonians almost never use surnames in Skyrim.

Pick the form that matches your race and backstory, then pair it with a first name from our Nord or Skyrim generators.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the form to the race: hyphenated or fused epithets for Nords, Latin-style names for Imperials, French-style for Bretons, house names for Dunmer, gro-/gra- stronghold names for Orcs. A Nord called 'Valerius' or a Dunmer called 'Snow-Shod' breaks immersion instantly.
  • For Nords, let the name say something true about the character: a deed (Cairn-Breaker, Troll-Bane), a trait (Strong-Heart, Quiet-Foot), a look (Red-Arm, Straw-Hair) or a trade (Net-Mender, Peat-Cutter). Canon names like Horse-Crusher and Honey-Hand all work this way.
  • Clan names are for families who matter. If your character is a farmhand from Rorikstead, a single byname (the Younger, Fast-Foot) or no surname at all is more authentic than claiming Battle-Born or Black-Briar.
  • Orc naming is gendered: gro- means 'son of' and gra- means 'daughter of', so Moth gro-Bagol and Ghorza gra-Bagol are siblings from the same stronghold line.
  • Write hyphenated Nord names with a capital after the hyphen (Snow-Shod, not Snow-shod); that is how every in-game name is spelled and how roleplay communities expect to read them.

Frequently asked questions

What are the real Skyrim last names from the game?

The named Nord clans are Battle-Born, Gray-Mane, Silver-Blood, Black-Briar, Shatter-Shield, Snow-Shod, Cruel-Sea and Stone-Fist, plus Stormcloak and Whitemane. Personal epithets include Once-Honored, Horse-Crusher, Fire-Tamer, Honey-Hand, Wide-Arm, Star-Sung, Law-Giver, Knot-Beard, Free-Winter, War-Bear, Six-Fingers, Early-Beard, Red-Arm, Sword-Maiden and Banner-Torn.

Do Nords in Skyrim have surnames?

Usually not. Most Nords go by a single name (Ralof, Lydia, Farkas), and a last name only appears when the character belongs to a notable clan or has earned a byname. That is why the generator offers both clan-style names and single epithets like 'the Unbroken' or 'Fast-Foot' that attach to one person rather than a family.

Can I use these last names for other races in Skyrim?

Yes, the list includes Imperial family names (Avenicci, Valerius, Tituleius, Maro), Breton surnames (Lylvieve, Dufont, Motierre), Dunmer names (Sadri, Atheron, Hlaalu, Severin), Orc stronghold names (gro-Bagol, gra-Dushnikh) and Redguard forms like at-Gilane. Elves, Khajiit and Argonians generally do not use last names.

Are these names lore-friendly for Elder Scrolls Online too?

They are. ESO uses the same Nord conventions (Jorunn the Skald-King, Wulfharth Ash-King, hyphenated clan names), the same Imperial and Breton styles, and Dunmer Great House names like Hlaalu, Redoran, Telvanni, Indoril and Dres that are included here.
