Generate multiverse names for comics, sci-fi and tabletop games: Earth-style reality designations, alphanumeric branch codes, poetic names for the whole multiverse, and evocative titles for individual parallel worlds and timelines.
About multiverse names
Multiverse names come in two registers, and most fiction uses both. The first is the catalogue number: Marvel's Earth-616, DC's Earth-2, the numbered universes of Dragon Ball and the branch designations of time-travel shows. These work because they imply an archive somewhere with a filing system, and because a bare number lets the reader fill in the differences. The convention is a base word (Earth, Reality, Universe, Branch, Timeline, Continuum) plus a number, a Greek letter, or a short tag like Prime, Null or Adjacent. Prime marks the main continuity; odd suffixes such as Earth-Fermata or Earth-Low Tide hint at what went differently.
The second register is the name a character would actually say. Nobody calls home 'Continuum Theta-Nine'; they call it the Unburned Timeline or the Drowned Earth, naming the one divergence that matters. And the multiverse as a whole tends to get a concrete metaphor: a weave, an orchard, a loom, a lattice, a library of elsewheres, a sheaf of pages. Physics terms (brane, foam, decoherence, many-worlds) add rigor to harder science fiction.
The list below mixes all three layers so you can name the whole structure, the individual branches inside it, and the official designation a cataloguer would stamp on each one.
Tips for choosing a name
- Name the divergence, not the world: the Ashfall Timeline or Earth-Without Oceans tells readers what changed, while Earth-7 tells them only that a filing system exists. Use both for the same place if characters and archivists talk about it differently.
- Reserve Prime, Zero, Null and Alpha for realities with special status, and keep the rest of your numbers irregular (Earth-3141, Branch 313-Halcyon) so they feel catalogued rather than counted.
- Pick one metaphor for the whole multiverse and stick to it; if it is a loom, branches are threads and collapses are snarls. Mixing orchard, ocean and library imagery in one story dilutes all three.
- For hard sci-fi, lean on real many-worlds vocabulary (branch, decoherence, superposition, brane) and avoid fantasy words like realm; for comics and superhero settings, Earth-plus-number is the expected idiom.
- Say the name in dialogue before you commit: Reality 4-Gamma and the Splintered Timeline both survive being spoken, whereas very long designations will get shortened by your characters anyway.
Frequently asked questions
Why are alternate Earths numbered like Earth-616?
Marvel adopted Earth-616 in the 1980s for its main continuity and DC had already used Earth-One and Earth-Two since the 1960s, so the Earth-plus-number format became the default comics shorthand for a parallel reality. The numbers usually have no meaning beyond being a label, which is why invented designations like Earth-3141 or Earth-Fermata read as authentic.
What is the difference between a multiverse name and a timeline name?
A multiverse name covers the whole structure of all realities (the Infinite Weave, the Omniverse Lattice), while a timeline or branch name points at one history inside it (the Unburned Timeline, Branch 44-Corvid). Parallel-universe names such as Earth-Aurora or the Drowned Earth sit in between: they name one world that shares a starting point with yours.
Can I use these names in a published comic, novel or game?
Yes; the names here are original or generic. Avoid lifting specific canonical designations such as Earth-616, Earth-1610 or Earth-Two into commercial work, since they are associated with Marvel and DC continuities, but the format itself is not protected.
How do I name the space between universes?
Fiction usually gives the gaps a physical metaphor: a seam, a gutter, a bulk, a membrane, a foam. Choose one that matches how travel works in your setting, so characters who fold through a brane live somewhere with a different vocabulary than characters who walk down a corridor of doors.
