Every Gem in Steven Universe is named after the stone she is made of, so the show's naming system is really mineralogy. A Gem's type tells you her caste and job: Pearls serve, Rubies guard, Sapphires see the future, Quartzes fight, Diamonds rule. Individuals of the same type are told apart by variety and colour (Holly Blue Agate, Crazy Lace Agate, Skinny Jasper, Biggs Jasper) or by a Homeworld serial such as Peridot Facet-2F5L Cut-5XG. Fusions take the name of the stone their combined gems would form: Ruby and Sapphire make Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl make Opal, all three Crystal Gems make Alexandrite.

That gives you a reliable recipe for an original character. Pick a real gemstone or a real variety of one, think about what its caste would be, and add a colour, a locality or a Facet-and-Cut code if you need to tell her apart from others of her type. Obscure but genuine stones (Larimar, Sugilite, Padparadscha, Bixbite) feel the most like canon because the show itself reached for them. Beach City humans follow a different joke: Onion, Sour Cream, Vidalia and Yellowtail are all food, so a townie OC can be a vegetable or spice with an ordinary surname.
