Generate star system names drawn from real astronomical catalogs, Bayer designations, and Arabic star names, alongside invented systems that sound like they belong on a sector map. Built for sci-fi writers, space RPG game masters, and 4X players naming their next colony.

About star system names

Real star systems are named in layers. The brightest stars carry traditional names, most of them Arabic (Aldebaran, Betelgeuse, Rigel), Latin (Regulus, Spica) or Greek (Sirius, Procyon), which survived through medieval star catalogs. In 1603 Johann Bayer added Greek letters plus the genitive form of the constellation, giving us Alpha Centauri, Epsilon Eridani and Tau Ceti. Later surveys switched to catalog numbers, so a system might be Gliese 581, HD 209458 or Kepler-186, named for whoever recorded it. Astronomers now designate exoplanets with a lowercase letter, so the second planet found around Kepler-62 is Kepler-62 c.

Good fictional star systems borrow one of these layers rather than inventing whole new grammar. A militarized setting might catalog everything as numbers and survey prefixes; a colonized frontier might name systems after captains, home towns or dead loved ones (Tamsin's Rest, Orrin's Hearth). Words like Prime, Major, Minor, Secundus and Reach are useful suffixes because readers already associate them with star charts. Avoid stacking cosmic adjectives such as Nebula Star or Cosmic Wanderer, which read as generic and tell the reader nothing about the place.

The list above mixes real nearby stars, notable exoplanet hosts, IAU-approved proper names and invented systems that follow the same rules, so you can pick a name that fits your setting's tone and level of realism.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide who named the system in your world. A survey drone produces catalog codes like LHS 1140; settlers produce names like Beltane's Fire. Mixing both across a sector map makes it feel lived in.
  • For a plausible hard sci-fi setting, use a real nearby star (Tau Ceti, Epsilon Eridani, Gliese 667C) and check its actual distance and spectral type so the travel times hold up.
  • Name planets in a system by adding a lowercase letter or Roman numeral: Kepler-62 e, Ross 128 b, or Iskander Prime IV.
  • Use a consistent suffix scheme. Prime for the main inhabited world, Minor for a companion star, Reach or Drift for a frontier system, so readers can decode names on sight.
  • Say the name aloud with a ship's-log sentence in front of it ('Jump complete. Arriving at Sable Crown.') and drop anything that trips your tongue.

Frequently asked questions

How are real star systems named?

The brightest stars keep traditional Arabic, Latin or Greek names. Others use Bayer designations (a Greek letter plus the constellation, like Delta Pavonis), Flamsteed numbers (61 Cygni), or catalog identifiers such as HD, Gliese, Kepler, WASP and TRAPPIST followed by a number. The IAU officially approves new proper names, which is why stars like Toliman, Chalawan and Xihe now exist.

Can I use real star names in my novel or game?

Yes. Star names and catalog designations are scientific facts and are not trademarked, so Tau Ceti, Wolf 359 and Kepler-452 are free to use. Just be aware that readers may know their real properties, so check distance and star type if realism matters.

What is the difference between a star system and a solar system?

The Solar System is specifically our Sun and its planets. Any other star with orbiting bodies is a star system or planetary system, and many are binary or triple systems, like Alpha Centauri, which is why letters such as Gliese 667C are used to specify one star among several.

How do I name a fictional star system so it sounds believable?

Copy the structure of real names: a name or catalog prefix plus a number or a modifier like Prime, Major, Minor or a Roman numeral. Two or three syllables in the core word (Halcyon, Vashti, Sarpedon) is more memorable than a long compound.
